Image Hosting on the Blockchain: How LBRY is addressing this with Spee.ch

There are many altcoins working on decentralized storage, like Burst, Storj, Maidsafe, Sia and many others. Though none of them address the need for hot linking images, such as an image hosting solution.

For the longest time I would use Photobucket for my image hosting, but then their bandwidth tiers really dropped and charging a premium for image hosting. If your posting to public websites like Steempeak, Partiko or Steemit then you will use up that bandwidth real quick.

I am trying not to use Steempeak’s or Steemit’s image uploading service. I would rather use an external service so I am not putting as much as a load on the their infrastructure if I can help it.

The first blockchain based image uploading service I found was called Supload. Ive used it for a few months, and it seemed to work well exempt when they would have outages. In the last few months there has been a few days where I could not upload anything to their service. And they have seemed to close their Discord.

With these outages I was forced to search for another image hosting provider. And searching for blockchain based image hosting I came across a curiously named website called Spee.ch

I realized that its a blockchain project running on LBRYs chain. And yesterday I uploaded my first picture yesterday, and its up and running without issue at the moment. You can view this image host on the blockchain via their explorer:

LBRY has been around for a few years now, It used to be a Top 100 coin though have seemed to fall into the 300ish range at this point. In 2016 I do not recall it being more than just an idea with a functional blockchain. But in 2018 they launched Spee.ch and I love the idea.

Using Sia’s client it does not have the ability to host images, and there are other file limitations as well. And you cannot share externally from their network, so anyone that wants to see what you posted on the blockchain would need to use their client... Though this is not the case with LBRYs Spee.ch project.

They also offer a service called LBRYPress, if thats a Wordpress alternative maybe something worth playing with. And if you install their Client from LBRY.io you can view videos and publish your own and earn rewards for your videos.

So it would seem a lot going on with LBRY now, glad to see a few years of development have created some great and much needed projects. I plan to use them for image uploading and hope it works out.
