Paris Saint-Germain and the Tokenization of the Web: The Game Has Already Started

You know it’s a great day when you open the sport newspaper and you find out that a major football (soccer) team is launching their own cryptocurrency.

Paris Saint-Germain is one of the most popular - and richest - clubs on the planet, and it’s certainly an amazing news that an organization that big and with such a massive fan-base are not only entering the space but bringing their audience on board with them.

You don’t have to be a PSG fan to appreciate that, hell you don’t even have to be a sports fan for that matter. But you can still see how steps likes this one would pave the way to the next wave of Blockchain adoption.

Tokenization of the Web: The Next Wave

First came the internet, and only a few “dreamers” were able to realize the game-changing aspect of the technology, even less people were able to capitalize on that.

Where the whole world thought that it was just a pipe dream and a passing nerd fever, others believed that the invention was here to stay and that everyone would be on the internet, and that it was only a matter of time.

Soon afterwards, the word started to spread and many entrepreneurs jumped on board and attempted to launch online ventures, or tried to convince business owners to start doing business on the web.

At the time, nothing seemed more laughable.

Granted, there were plenty of opportunists chasing a quick buck, some of them might’ve even ‘oversold’ their capabilities in order to seize a portion of the vast funding pools that become abundant whenever a revolutionary innovation comes around.

Then the Dot Com bubble came in, and the naysayers felt vindicated, to them it was the final stake in the genie’s heart.

But nothing was further from the truth.

The reality is that business on the web was similar than business in the real world, it’s a tough and risky environment and only a few actually make it.

Despite the copious amounts of doom and gloom delivered by the media, the sector had not only recovered, but went on to dominate not only the finance world but became an important part of everybody’s life.

It sure took a few years, and it certainly passed through some rough patches and received its fair share of criticism: Online blogs were laughable, Online dating was laughable, YouTube was laughable…

Hell, even the simple idea of regular business launching their own websites and accepting credit cards online was utterly laughable.

But as it turns out, the market doesn’t discriminate against new concepts, and nothing can stop an idea whose time has come.

Nowadays, look around and try to find a physical store that can hold a candle to Amazon.com, even more extraordinary is the fact that the most profitable part of Amazon is their Amazon Web Services.

I guess that Dot Com bubble didn’t pan out as some mainstream “visionaries” had predicted.

Then came the blockchain, and only a few “dreamers” were able to realize the game-changing aspect of the technology, even less people were able to capitalize on that.

At the time, nothing seemed more laughable.

Granted, there were plenty of opportunists chasing a quick buck, some of them might’ve even ‘oversold’ their capabilities - via ICOs and otherwise - in order to seize a portion of the vast funding pools that become abundant whenever a revolutionary innovation comes around.

The reality is that business on the web was similar than business in the real world, it’s a tough and risky environment and only a few actually make it.

From that point on, it was only a matter of time until comparisons with the Dot Com bubble started to surface… From websites ending in Dot Com ironically enough.

The great news is that the blockchain came in a time where there’s an entire generation of early adopters who have already build substantial audiences on the web, and who are now creating entire communities and channels to create a culture about the topics they are passionate about.

These content creators and influencers are now already rewarding their audience with all kinds of prizes and giveaways. This is already taking place.

Which creates an excellent opportunity for cryptocurrencies to tokenize the web, as they allow the most influential members to not only monetize their content but to reward the most engaged members of their community.

Let’s say they’re into Gaming, they can create Game Coin - or whatever they wish to call it - and not only use that to reward the most valuable members of their community, but also to gamify the user experience and to grow their community even bigger.

Fun fact: This last paragraph is from a previous post from when over a year ago, just when the SMTs were announced.

And this phenomenon has already started by the way, Paris Saint-Germain is developing a Fan Token Offering (FTO) to incentivize participation from the team’s fanbase.

They are partnering up with Socios.com, which is a tokenized sports voting platform whose primary goal is to amplify the engagement between fans and their favorite teams and players from around the world.

My guess is, this is just the beginning and there will be many more partnerships between cryptocurrencies and all kinds of popular institutions.

And some of you reading this today, may even play part of that. The future is before us ladies and gentlemen, instead of watching it pass us by, what about we seize it.

What do you say?

awesome concept I love PSG:)

Great for the world of crypto as PSG are one of the biggest football teams out there.

That's really exciting news. I probably won't jump in on that one as I'm not a fan of PSG, but it could definitely open doors for tokenization of teams that I do follow. And it's another use for the blockchain. I'm excited for the days when we'll finally be able to say "I told you so" to all the people who said blockchain was worthless. :)

Haha yeah that would be a great day!

I'm not a fan of PSG either, but I think many more team will follow suit soon. :)

P.S: Out of curiosity, what's your team?

Currently I'm rooting for Arsenal and Bournemouth. I have both of them in a contest, so they're my teams. :D

How about you?

Barcelona actually, I was a Barca fan back when we had those terrible years when we couldn't win a title to save our lives haha luckily now it's been better in that regard.

I've been to Barcelona. It's a nice city. I didn't get to see a football game, but I would go back again.

Agreed this might be looked back a pivotal point in the adoption of cryptocurrency/tokenization. PSG is a footballing giant, I am surprised not many people are taking not of this.

Thank you for posting about it.

Yeah me too. I wonder how come not many outlets are covering this.

Thank you btw!

SMT's can't come soon enough, I think the underlying system powering Steem token is perfect for these kind of use cases.

Exactly, it would be perfect.

blockchain is the driving force and crypto is its catalyst both will go hand in hand :D

Totally! Let's hope they start holding hands more often! :)

PSG is probably the second football club to jump on the blockchain / token bandwagon. Avai FC from Florianopolis might be the first ...

I actually live in Florianopolis :) But I think PSG is the first, I could be wrong .

You do? Oh man, really? I've heard lots of nice things about Florianopolis.

Is this a coincidence or what? :)

Will you participate in your local ICO?

Looks like PSG press conference was on 11th and Avai on 12th.

Let's see who's ICO will start first. Avai's is set to start on October 3rd: https://news.sportyco.io/2018/09/13/video-from-yesterdays-avai-fc-press-conference-available/

Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.

Well said! :)

I'm just thankful that we're not getting all the government we're paying for.
