New Social Blockchain - Snax

in #crytpodapps5 years ago

I've always known the biggest competitor to Steemit wasn't going to be another Decentralized Social Network, but a blockchain that was built on top of an already established Centralized Social Network and Snax is looking and going just that. Snax, according to it's whitepaper, is a "Decentralized Social Media Overlay" and just created it's first block yesterday 4/10/2019.

Introduction to Snax

Looking through the Snax Whitepaper they begin talking about the value of content created on social networks and the difficulty of monetizing such content. The strengths and weaknesses are discussed on** Decentralized Social Platforms** such as

Source

  1. Strengths - the open ranking system that estimates value automatically and converts that value into the native token and the absence of censorship, both of which can be seen on Steemit
  2. Weaknesses - Early adopter advantage of "easy rewards" due to lack of competition and the struggle of competing with other well established platforms such as Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter.

It also takes a look at the difficulties of "overlaying" a blockchain on an existing platform to offer users monetization and uses Reddcoin as one of the earliest attempts at this as well as the work Brave has been doing. Some strengths and weaknesses of Centralized Social Platforms with Overlays are

  1. Strengths - creators can receive additional income streams using social networks and platforms they are already familiar with.
  2. Weaknesses - to receive rewards an extension or some sort of wallet/application has to be installed and other barriers to entry for new users.

Snax uses a DPOS consensus algorithm style blockchain similar to EOS and Steem in which block producers are elected by those who stake the Snax Utility Token. They provide additional details and information as to how attention can be valued, token supply and rewards, and Snax utility in the white paper and I won't be covering it here for now.

Creating a Snax Account

The first thing you'll need to do is to download the snax.one extension on the google chrome store and set-up your wallet. Once that is completed and your private key is saved somewhere securely, you'll be asked to make a tweet to Authenticate your Twitter account. After a few minutes you should be able to visit the snax.one website and log-in your online dashboard/wallet.

Snax Dapps

As with mosts DPOS blockchains that I'm aware of account registration and transactions are free on the blockchain. dApps can be created on the Snax blockchain and one example they give in the white paper is an

For instance, simple promo-event: a company wants to reward every tenth follower for
a repost of some promo-content. To implement this event, it is possible to create a simple
Snax dApp, which will automatically calculate reposts and send winners gift certificates as
an NFT for goods or services of the company. The company will treat NFT as a confirmation
of the right to a gift. The blockchain will guarantee trust on every stage of the event,
and a company will be able to run a promo dApp through a convenient Snax UI without
programming.

Looks like Snax is already aware of the issues with account creation and cost of running a dApp on other platforms like EOS and is staking the pre-mine of 16 billion they receive at the launch of the blockchain to help pay for account creation and provide a fair RAM price to protect dApp developers from speculation.

The Future of Snaxx

According to Snax's roadmap, it looks like the next step for the project is to integrate rewards onto the Steemit platform and allow for social transactions over Steemit. Some other highlights that I see is moving rewards onto other centralized platforms, creating a decentralized exchange, and then getting Snax on third party exchanges by the end of the year.

One strength I see in Snax is the "free" rewards. Too many times I see blockchains try to market themselves as social blockchains, but then require users to purchase the coins to be able to distribute them to others such as Reddcoin or Investfeed, essentially tipping others with your own money. I much rather Steemit style rewards in which others are rewarded from a pool. Granted Snax is a little different as it rewards more interactions than just upvotes, but still think it's the same basic concept.

In Conclusion

If anyone can get into contact with @nathanmars let me know as I think this will be a great project that can be added to his Seven77 project to help encourage people to promote and interact with Steem content in Twitter. Just think using Snax and promoting your Steem content on twitter will not only drive more traffic and upvotes on Steem for your content, but it will also help you earn another crypto as well.

I think this will also be a great crypto to support @abh12345 Engagement league when it moves to Steem. It will be interesting to see the rankings from his calculations on engagement vs the way Snax will be calculating engagement.

Anyways I can't wait until Snax comes to Steem because I think these two projects will be a great complement to eachother. It would be awesome if they worked with Steem-Engine to get listed on the exchange as a possible base pair for "SMT's" on the platform. Would be another great way for Steem outsiders to get introduced to Steem based tokens that don't currently have Steem accounts.

Finally, looking forward to a smart contract decentralized giveaway system for Twitter. So often I see giveaways on Twitter without any way to validate these have been completed. Snax will allow smart contracts to be developed, from what I understand, that can automate and make public said giveaways so anyone can track and verify they happened on the blockchain. Very cool in my opinion.

hmmm..

Should be Steem?

They should get their SNAX token soon - maybe ping them before someone steals it? :D

Wonder if this is them? 700 STEEM in the account sitting there.

They are @snaxteam. They have there own blockchain so they won't be creating a token. Their focus is rewarding content on existing platforms based on engagement from my understanding so their blockchain will be on top of steem.

I saw that too referring to Steemit as the blockchain. Maybe @dragosroua can help get that updated as he's a blockproducer for the chain or maybe can tag someone who can.

Looks like it could be interesting. We kind of need some glue in this market. Not quite sure if this will add to or help resolve the much fractured and ever expanding markets. I was hoping for far more consolidation during the crypto bear market. So many things just don’t have enough users to amount to enough traction.

I'm thinking this maybe one of them as well, but for something that requires so little to get started with and rewards me for doing something I'm already doing anyway I see very little downside currently. Plus, I'm just looking for easy ways to earn right now anyways as almost everything that will be around during the next bull market will see some increase in value so fingers crossed this one makes it until then.

If not then a few minutes sign-up time is wasted and I move on. I just know those on the platform are making a push on Steem to promote and be more active on Twitter, so it's a possible way for them to earn both on Twitter and one Steem.

No idea if it is something that will do well or not ,but at least it is another option for other users.

To me it's a chrome extenstion I have to install and then I just use the Twitter platform as usual. If I log on to my wallet in a year and my Snax is worth millions woohoo.

If it's worth $10 well, see if I can sell it for more Steem. There's been a lot of Social tokens that have tried to gain traction and it's been hard, so not holding my breath, but with an upcoming bull market everything tends to go up at least some.

You just never know what the value of these things will be one day. I just don't like social media so I don't use all these sites and never will. I only have whatsap because my business partner has it but I am never joining the Face Books and Twitters and such like.

this is interesting and I must look into it, but i note when I go tot he site my Antivirus gives a warning, maybe its still new but I will look into it further, thanks for sharing

No idea, like I said their is a witness on the Steem platform that is a block producer. Plus, I can access it at work, which has pretty strict conditions on what you can and can't get too, so I don't think it's an issue, but I guess test at your own risk??? I've been going to the site testing the Beta for about a few weeks to a month so . . . IDK?

I am a bit dubious to try it now I got the warning both at work and at home, mind you I have good measures setup at both, I may just watch from the sidelines for now

Thanks for the heads up. Good to know.

it probably is safe but since security falls under me at work I am hesitant ot try it, would be kind of embarassing if it went bad lOL

Hello, We can assure you that our site is completely safe. Could you give more information so that we can understand the situation? What antiviruses give you warnings?

@tattoodjay @snaxteams wanting to know what antivirus warning youre getting

Yes i just saw that and thats a good sign for me and I replied ;)
