Noche de Velitas! - The Colombian 'Night of Candles' is being celebrated as I post this!
Happy December 7th! This is a slice of life snap from Colombia!
It's a holiday even if you don't remember what for! Despite it being officially the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, a lesser known catholic holiday declared papally in 1854; here in Colombia we celebrate with candles!
This is a whole town party! The weird people tonight are the ones WITHOUT candles lit!

That's cool! Colorado doesn't have a tradition for this day that I've ever seen. But then, there aren't a lot of Catholics here. Colorado has a big Juneteenth celebration and a big Cinco De Mayo celebration, both of which we didn't have in New Jersey when I was a kid; but in New Jersey the 4th of July was an all-day affair with a parade and an all day carnival and then fireworks at night, whereas here, most people don't even go to fireworks because it costs money, like you have to be at a sports arena to see them professionally done. We also had Mischief Night back east which nobody here has even heard of unless they're from back east too; the night before Halloween is when teenagers would go out and do pranks, like tp somebody's house (like maybe, their teacher, lol). Nothing serious, generally, just kids being kids.
No cool fire traditions in Colorado (besides us Pagans celebrating worldwide Pagan celebrations, but we don't have a large local presence), unless, of course, you count "college kids lighting couches on fire in the middle of the street when they win a football game against the other college in state because college rivalry," lol. I don't know why couches, but it's ALWAYS a friggin' couch. Probably because a lot of college kids in shared houses keep a couch on the porch so it's a convenient flammable thing to drag out into the street. XD

This is so funny, and when I think back it does seem that in the college days there was a surplus of couches. I think a high percentage of second hand couches from around the state end up in college towns. How many of those get burned? Loving the image search!
In Fort Collins (my college town), May was basically National Dumpster Diving Month, because all the rich kids left all sorts of treasure behind when they moved out of the dorms. Not just couches, but stereos and computers!!
@ecoinstant, I looked some of night lighting decorations of your street. It was memorable for Colombians I guess. We decorate lanterns, Buddhist flags, neon lights our streets, temples and houses inside May month. We all work together with mutual collaboration. Next May I'll show you our decorations. Another months doing some activities. But Especially May.

Arghh. DTube not working for me. We did the candles and marching through town and singing in the beginning of December to open the Christmas market. I am pretty sure it was on the 1st Advent day or the Saturday before...
