It is said that St. Patrick himself used the shamrock and three leaved plant to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagans.
It is a shame that in recent years, the festival has been criticised for being overly commercialised and drinking alcohol is promoted too heavily resulting in public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.
Other critics have noted that the festivities have ventured too far from the original purpose of the festival which was to honour St Patrick as well as Irish cultural heritage.
Many people misrepresent Irish culture and one example is the common sigh of leprechaun outfits which is a demeaning stereotype of Irish people originating from caricatures of the Irish.
