Why Germany celebrates Nikolaustag on December 6steemCreated with Sketch.

Why is Nikolaustag celebrated before Christmas in Germany?

Seems not common in all countries around the world. Each December 6th, children in Germany celebrate 'St. Nikolaus Day'. The Santa look-alike encourages all kids to make summaries on their behaviour and to place their shoes outside their front doors on the evening before? - strange Germans?

Nikolaus is not equal Santa Claus - I think at least

They look similar, they wear same outfits - but they are two different people. Nikolaus is more religious and should not be linked to the commercial Santa Claus which was brought to us by our lovely friends from the US. The actual Nikolaus was a Greek Christian Bishop that died on December 6 in 346 BC - his official names was Nicholas of Myra and is known for miracles and giving gifts secretly, he is the patron saint of little children, sailors, merchants and students. The Germans combined his story with myths and the day was born - kind of.

But why do children put their shoes / boots outside the night before?

The lovely kids are waiting for Nikolaus to come in the middle of the night on his donkey to fill the boots with little treats – mainly sweets or coins, fruits. The kids that showed some "naughty" behaviour are finding their boots empty. Not going into detail on certain penalty things - but you might get the idea.

My princess was a good girl

...at least according to the content of the boots - but I know the reality lol

something I like about steemit, is that you learn a lot from the traditions of other countries ... Today I learned about this German tradition. Thanks for sharing....

Glad I could add a little something useful

Happy Sankt Nikolaus Day!! I put out Nikolaus-Stiefel and got nothing!!!

What does that mean? ;) PS... Of course, we KNOW the princess was good!

Naughty @dswigle - I would have added some good stuff there - send me your application list or Wishlist or summary :-)

:) LOL Thank you!

But why SHOES? St. Nick's day is also celebrated in the corner of Wisconsin I grew up in.

Very good question - in Germany shoes, the brits have a similar one with socks. I might do a separate post on where this comes from.

Right, stockings is a thing here in the U.S., too. I never wondered why until now. Isn't that weird?
