Prehistoric or non-existent (nireka: not, leka: write) is a term used to refer to the period in which the written notes are not yet available. The prehistoric age can be said to begin at the time of the formation of the universe but is generally used to refer to the period in which there is life on Earth where man began to live. The boundary between prehistoric times and historical times is the beginning of writing. This raises an understanding that prehistory was the time before the discovery of writing, while history is the age after writing. The end of the prehistoric era or the beginning of the historical age for every nation in the world is not the same depending on the nation's civilization. One example is the Egyptians around the year 4000 BC people already know the writing, so at that time, the Egyptians have entered the age of history. The prehistoric period in Indonesia is estimated to end in the time of the founding of the Kingdom of Kutai, around the 5th century; evidenced by the existence of a yupa-shaped inscription found on the banks of the Mahakam River, East Kalimantan just entered the era of history. Since there is no relics of written records from prehistoric times, information about this age is obtained through such fields as paleontology, astronomy, biology, geology, anthropology, archeology. In the sense that pre-historic evidence is only obtained from goods and bones in the excavation site of historical sites.

The Stone Age occurred before the metal was known and the tools of culture were mainly made of stone beside wood and bone. This stone age was re-epitomized into 4 ages, among others:

The old stone age (palaeolitikum) is so called because man-made stone tools are still roughly crafted, not sharpened or polished. When viewed from the angle of its livelihood, this period is called the period of food gathering (gathering food), humans are still living in nomadic (moving) and do not know how to grow crops.

There are two cultures that are the standard of this age, namely:

  • Pacitan Culture (Pithecanthropus)
  • Culture Ngandong, Blora (Homo Wajakinensis and Homo Soloensis)

The tools produced include: handheld ax / perimbas (chopper / cutter), Tools of animal bones or deer horns and Flakes from Chalcedon stone (for peeling food)

The Middle Stone Age

  • Characteristics of the Mesolithic Age:

Nomadic and still doing food gathering (gathering food) The tools produced almost the same as the era of palaeolithikum which is still a tool stone rough. The discovery of cliff hills on the edge of the beach called Kjoken Mondinger (kitchen waste) Tools of mesolithic times among others: Hand ax (Pebble), Short ax (hache Courte) Pipisan (grinding stones) and axes of stone times split. Tools above are found in many areas of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Flores. The tools of Mesolithic culture found in the cave of Lawa Sampung, East Java called Abris Sous Roche include: Flakes (flakes), the tip of arrowhead, pipisan, square ax and tools of bone.
