MAP Trail Curation Contest - Delegated SP and Free Upvotes - Week 1

in #curation6 years ago

As part of MAP Trail's mission to support curators, I will be delegating 200 SP for 20 days to one individual per week.

Eligibility

The term "curator" shall mean an individual who aggregates posts within Steemit on the basis of quality.

A curator can be either independent or working within a curation community.

The published "curated post" can be on a specific subject area or of general interest. This includes contests that are content-based and result in a final post of the best entries.

The curation activity must take place at least weekly.

The curator should have an active SP of less than 2,000 SP - this includes existing delegations.

If you're an independent curator...

Please leave a comment; just include a link to your most recent curated compilation of posts, plus a short description of your topics of interest and how long you have been curating on Steemit. If you have both a personal and a curation account, please include both.

If you curate for a community...

Please state which community account you curate for and links to recent posts that you have discovered. If your username does not always appear within the curation posts, I can still verify your role with the curation community administrators.

Prizes

The main prize is a delegation of 200 SP for 20 days.

However, if you are a quality curator and not yet being followed by the MAP Trail, then this is also an opportunity to make yourself known and possibly be followed and upvoted on a regular basis by my @accelerator account. This is a fairly new focus for the MAP Trail and the process of adding curators is on-going.

How the Winner shall be chosen

I shall select a number of curators who I feel will make the most effective use of their delegated SP. I am aware that this has an element of subjectivity, but then so does curating. The last step to select a winner shall be done randomly. To make this last process transparent, I shall use a comment timestamp as the random number generator.

The winner shall be announced on day 7 of this post and the delegation made soon after.

Remember that there will be another round next week, so this is not a one-off shot!

Last Thoughts

The process of supporting curators has to involve some level of communication; in order for me to allocate resources to the most effective people will sometimes require some discussion as to the whole process of curating and the motivations behind doing it. This is especially true of curators who may be working semi-anonymously within a curation trail.

On a personal note, I have been curating for over a year and have gained experience of different communities and their methodologies. I am therefore aware of the work that goes on behind the scenes in order to maintain standards. If anybody wishes some advice related to curating, then just ask!

I look forward to welcoming many new curators to the MAP Trail!

Just a note that this post has about 24 more hours to run, then I shall do the random draw for which curator shall receive the delegated SP.

Any curators who have not yet expressed an interest, I would advise you to leave a comment :-)

OK, this post has just expired and time for the "delegation lottery".
To make it visibly fair, I am listing 5 curators and curation accounts below.
Once this comment is published, I shall check the timestamp in seconds and award the 200SP delegation for 20 days to the name that corresponds to T(mod 5).

Also note that I am currently delegating to @mirrors and @bestofph.

This week's list is:

0 - @hetty-rowan
1 - @lynncoyle1
2 - @anonyvoter
3 - @kendallron
4 - @classical-radio

Good luck!

The official timestamp on the above comment is 07:03:48.
48 mod 5 = 3
So this week's winner is number 3: @kendallron.
Congratulations!

Congratulations @kendallron! Interesting randomisation method!

:-) yeah, the method works and is fair so long as the number of entrants is a factor of 60 - so 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 usernames all work.
BTW one can see the seconds in steemd.
Maybe it will catch on!

Congratulations @kendallron :) Nice job @accelerator; very kind of you to do!

This post was shared in the Curation Collective Discord community for curators, and upvoted and resteemed by the @c-squared community account after manual review.

Many thanks! I hope to see curators from the collective take advantage of this :-)

I'm a beginning curator for c² project ... love to search for good posts and hope to be mentored someday to be a curie curator also. I would love to have that 200 sp delegation so I can spread more love to the talented people here on the steemit blockchain.

Hello, have had a look at your various curation activities and have added you to the MAP Trail. You will be receiving upvotes from @accelerator (subject to my VP and technical issues!)

Hey there @accelerator! What an awesome initiative you've started here :) I'm a bit in the background as far as curating goes; I curate for asapers, judge for thedarkhorse's weekly curation contest, and pass on all kinds of posts to @c-squared. So I find something like this so worthwhile! In my travels, there's a few that I pass on regularly to c-squared, so I'm tagging them in the hopes that they may qualify :)

Thanks again for what you are doing!

Hi, thanks for getting in touch; have seen your activities on c-squared. You're precisely the kind of curator whose work is largely hidden from the wider community. That means that being added to the upvoting MAP Trail is a measure of support without necessarily upvoting "curation posts". I'm still not 100% clear if that would be helpful, so your input would be very useful.

One thing I just will have to do is keep a private spreadsheet of all accounts being followed and review them, say, once a month to see who has stopped curating.

Re the other accounts you mentioned, mirrors has received a delegation, asapers is being followed, but perhaps you may ask the other two to leave a comment here and say "Hi!" Thanks. I shall have a look at them myself too.

Thank you for delegating to @mirrors and following asapers. @jaynie is the one who started @steemitbloggers, not sure if you know it, but she curates from that group, of which I am a member. She also writes a regular minnow curation post too. I know that she has been away taking care of her father, but I'm hoping she'll pop by since I tagged her. I'll drop her a line as well. @insideoutlet is one of the founders of asapers.

I appreciate your comment to me very much and for recognizing the "hidden" work that I do. That alone means plenty. I would appreciate any support from you, but I'm not exactly sure how you would go about it since I don't have curation posts to upvote. Are you suggesting upvoting my other posts? If so, I understand your "spreadsheet" comment then too. Truthfully, I'm a little unclear of the "input" you're looking for :)

Thanks again...for all of this :)

Thanks, have added you to the MAP Trail, and have been in contact with some of your suggested curators.

The "input" is really just to test out that my ideas will be both workable and useful, eg., kinda pointless running contests when nobody turns up! :-(

The only way I can see to support individual curators is to upvote their posts, whether they are curated posts or not (given, of course, my relatively limited overall SP). It also means I shall have to check once per month that those people followed are still curating - things change - and if they are not I shall remove them. There will be some time-lag, but that's OK, this is not a precise algorithm :-)

That sounds great to me. Thank you so much for the support! I really do appreciate it ;) I'm always running out of voting power, especially as a judge in the curation contest I'm involved with, so any help via upvoting my own posts that can increase my own VP is much appreciated :)

And point taken; pointless planning a party with no guests :)

Thanks for vouching for us, @lynncoyle. Really very grateful. @accelerator got me a massive delegation. And it is serving my efforts well.

You're most welcome @mirrors; I was glad to hear it; you truly deserve it :)

I think you could say I'm a curator also… but in a different way than what you describe…
The 200SP would be welcome of course, but right now I'm more in search of visibility… just take a look at my feed and tell me what you think about my project.

You pose an interesting dilemma. I've looked at the project and is essentially curating users rather than posts. Do you reject many requests to be in the directory?

Untill now...none. But that's because I didn't receive any :-)
The listings you see are all found by me in my daily currating rounds. I try to find accounts with a certain level of quality and interaction with others. No spammers… and a minimum of 100 posts. Soon I will also implement a mechanism to get unactive accounts out of the list... just have to think about an exact timeframe... 30 or 60 or 90 days… still have to work out that question (any idea's are welcome...). That way the directory will result in an overview of active users/posters.

In the longer run I will have to find other curators as you can't be a specialist in all disciplines. I do like arts, photography and writing… but don't have enough knowlegde to determine good posters in, for example, science, sports,...

As your work is cumulative (the directory) rather than discrete curation posts, you may find other curators useful to fill in those topics you are less comfortable with, eg., for science look at @steemstem.

As for inactive accounts, I'd set it at 90 days - summer holidays can be quite long and you want to avoid too many re-activations.

activation and de-activations will be automatic... but yes indeed, I was also thinking about 90 days…
And @steemstem is already listed… so are you BTW ;-) but it's more a question of personal interest... it's easier to curate things you have a feeling for…

Anyway, thanks for reacting!

Nice giveaway .. I am sure there are allot on here that can put that 200 SP to good use. I run many promotions and give out many upvotes to mostly new members here on Steemit. So if I win that is where my upvotes will continue to go, to those that will appreciate them the most.

Hi there... Im a curator from c² and curie and I also have our own curation project to support our Filipino people.. There is a lot of authors from the Philippines who needs support that we are trying to reach by giving a decent upvote. here is the latest curation post that I authored myself https://steemit.com/bestofph/@bestofph/best-of-ph-daily-featured-post-47 as an example.. and we are looking forward from project like this to extend more our grasps and promote content of a high quality from our people.. hope you can help us grow more...

Hi, yes, have seen your posts on c-squared and shall add you to the MAP Trail, and include @bestofph in the next compilation post.
One question, I notice that your delegation incentive is quite generous - I figured the last payout is equivalent to about 16% APR, which is on a par with many steemit "investments". I have a similar scheme as MAP Rewarder but that has a focus on earning money that can then be used for more community support.
So the question is: will returning 85% of earnings to delegators limit the growth of the account you need to upvote your curated posts?
I am actually willing to support you, I've just not seen such a high level of interest paid back to delegators without calling it an investment!

@accelerator

Answer: To some degree yes. The account's growth is dependent on the charity of the delegations and how much people would be willing to support the community by upvoting the community posts. Since most of the earnings go back to delegations, the community account will have to content itself with the curation rewards.

I don't think it's a real investment but perspective changes from time to time. The point of creating that curation community was to upvote Filipino authors that post quality content or content that isn't a shitpost or toxic to the platform. But we needed SP for the program, who would want to delegate to us if we are a nobody and there's hardly anything in it for the delegator, better off having their SP delegated to a bot with a real ROI.

So we decided to have the delegations shell out some ROI for delegators. We get to have the SP we need to promote people and delegators get to earn while having their SP do good for the platform passively. BUT no ROI is fixed, in the end, we're just dependent on the grace of whoever wants to support the community post so there is no fixed ROI.

We don't even advertise that we provide that much incentive until someone asks or mentions what's in it for them when they delegate. Putting those incentives as a front would obscure the primary purpose why we even made the curation in the first place, promote others while money becomes a secondary benefit and everyone wins.

You can reach me via discord if you want to discuss this further. We appreciate you taking interest in the program. We needed the motivation.

Many thanks for the background; it struck me as very similar to my MAP Rewarder at the start. The difference is that MAP Rewarder was then run as a separate entity with a bespoke algorithm to create income; much of that income goes to delegators and some helps fund the upvotes to MAP Trail members.

The Classical-radio account is a curation and support account for the #classical-music tag on Steemit (run by @bengy). We have an ongoing curation post (roughly every 3 days where the bulk of the liquid payout is rewarded to the featured posts. (Note:at the moment, I am experimenting with a new split to help grow the account and to pay for a small upvote boost, however, the split is detailed at the end of each curation post).

The #classical-music tag is small but we have punched well above our weight with quite a number of well deserved curie and c2 votes. The curation from the @classical-radio account is submitted to the c2 channel which gets out authors better exposure in comparison to posting in the much larger #music tag.

At the moment, we are supporting jazz, folk and traditional genres of music in addition to the core Classical.

Being a relatively new and small account (although we have delegation from the community), a boost delegation of 200SP would nearly double our power. This would give us a greater scope to return back to the #classical-music community in general.

Thanks for giving the opportunity to apply for the delegation!

Not sure if you would count me directly as the curator, but think you might be interested in seeing what we are doing with the Pay It Forward Curation Contest. Right now this contest is run from my personal account, but working hard to get enough delegations for @pifc to move it over. In the last week or so we have received 1100sp in delegations and looking to push this account to 2,000sp if all possible.

Our entire focus is on helping those who write quality original content. The mission is to actually empower others to become good curators and teach them how to find quality content to reward. By doing this many have also learned how to become better content producers themselves further adding to the quality of content on steemit.

If you have questions feel free to hit me up on discord, thedarkhorse #6765.

Either way thank you for offering to delegated to those who are out there working towards helping the little guys. This effort sometimes feels very much one of self sacrifice that goes largely unnoticed. Lately it seems a few more people are starting to notice the efforts of those out there helping the little guys onboard and it great to see this turn in attitude on steemit.

Hi, thanks for the briefing. As I see that @pifc is brand new, I will happily add it to the MAP Trail but would like to see a few posts before adding it to the "delegation lottery", hopefully next week :-)
