My Dog Actually Enjoyed Riding in the Bike Trailer Today! (And a Short Video of Him Being Adorable)

in #cycling4steemit6 years ago (edited)

When I first bought my dog trailer, Sebastian loved going for rides. I had eased his way onto it, keeping it in the house for the first week. He had no problem when I started taking it on the street. After a few weeks he started yelping, whining and trying to rip the screen every time the trailer started moving. I gave up. That was a couple weeks ago.

I kept the trailer on the porch so he could get in it when I was just sitting outside to read. He never stayed in but he always jumped in willingly. Today I had him get in while I wheeled it around the yard by hand. He absolutely loved it.

I decided to take him down the street to play with his old dog roommate. It was just 1.4 km but he behaved very well, only whining a couple times when he saw other dogs. That is totally normal and I can deal with that. Maybe tomorrow I'll try 2-2.5 km.

Has anyone used something like the Walkydog Bike Leash to walk dogs while riding a bike? I've always been scared to this because he bolts to chase any cats, squirrels, rabbits or rats. Even though it has a spring, I fear he will pull my bike over. Perhaps it could be attached to the trailer instead. Although I might have to add something onto the trailer to do so. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do that? I really want to take my dog on the road with me even if it will mean shorter travel days.

Oh dude, it's lovely to hear about that!

You know... it occured me later that maybe he was feeling some discomfort from the trailer shaking, maybe something physical that was causing pain.

Guess that keeping the trailer around encouraged him more, now you just need to keep up with training him into getting used to it, it's just a matter of time till he sees it as a good thing.

Well he was back to whining barking and trying to rip the screen again today. I don't know if I could possibly handle him on a bike trip. I might end up hating touring if I have to spend the whole trip working about calming him down. My summer is kind of starting to suck.

That's sad to hear =s

I don't even attempt to bring my dog with me, he acts the same way, he's to anxious.

I really hope so. He was excited to get in it this time. I'll just take him slightly further tomorrow, then a little more the next day. Maybe he just wasn't feeling well and it was temporary.

Cute guy! How old is he?

He's 5 and a half. I adopted him from the SPCA when he was 5. He has a lot of behavior issues I've had to work with.

What kind of issues? Something serious?

He gets aggressive and tries to attack people when they pet him. Trying hard to not have him bark and run after everyone who walks by the fence.

Well not every dog like when someone try to pet him. I have 9 dogs and i know something about it. Maybe he is just very territorial

Well I need to change that habit or I'm going to get sued when he finally bites someone. I tell everyone not to pet him and they pet him anyway.

Well as u see ppl sometimes r brainless. I Wonder how would thay react if everyone on the street would like to hug tchem without their permission. Let me know how work is going
