Dad Tip of the Day: Sticker Charts

Dad Tip of The Day: Use incentives (such as stickers) to help reinforce and reward desired actions for young kids.

Kids are often easy to please (young that is), and the simplest things can help motivate them when it comes to helping reinforce how you want them to act and behave. This has proven to be more effective than a hard line and dictator-type approach when it comes to behavior modification.

Praise, recognition and rewards are a great way to motivate kids to do something better or act in a different way.

As an example, our son Jacob was calling for us when going to bed (such as, where are you? What are you doing?), he was waking up in the middle of the night and calling for us (as opposed to simply going back to sleep) and he was waking up before he was allowed to (using the reverse alarm clock). So in order to correct these things and giving him a full night’s rest without disrupting the house, we created a sticker chart where he could earn stickers for completing his “sleep manners” each night. If he could 1. Go to bed without calling for us 2. Stay asleep and not call for us if he woke up and 3. Wait until the green alien clock was on, he could earn stickers for his chart accordingly. At first, he didn’t earn too many stickers, but as he got rewarded and praised for doing his sleep manners, he got motivated and soon was soon doing all three all the time.

The reward system has proven to be an effective method in other ways – such as potty training – so using it tactically can provide great benefits to the child and the parents!

Would love to hear any similar methods you have tried before!

Just like the smiley face stickers in kindergarten or the red, yellow, and green card system.

Great idea.... when i was child i also behave like Jacob. Really lovely boy and your idea is very good and effective for your kid. Kids are innocent so they do anything and it's their beauty. Thanks sir @brian.rrr for exchanging your beautiful experience with us.

Fortunately children are easier to carry, to entertain and change their mood, we just have to understand them, give them love and have patience... Congratulations to you and your wife for achieving a creative strategy to educate their children. These strategies are a win for the whole family.

The truth is that this helps a lot the stickers are adored by children I have seen how my cousins enjoy these stickers my tian usually give them because they ate all the food or behaved very well

They also usually offer for example if you behave well in school and do your homework give you a reward this usually der food

But I think the stickers are a classic is something that over the years are still the children enjoy collecting them

Jacob is doing very well

The truth is this is a good technique

My experience with these stickers is very good in the school where I usually spend classes that children are very restless is a bit difficult to keep them quiet so this work well the sticker that is used are the happy faces

I usually wear a shirt that is clear if they behave very well they will have their happy face and they are proud to wear their happy face on their shirt

A good method children really enjoy getting their stickers for something good that they do that motivates them and teaches them

There is another technique maybe not the best but it works and is to say that if they do something right or have a good actituda we will take them to eat ice cream or chocolate to let them know that they will have their reward

But of course not always apply this sweet if not once in a while and when something is very strong

When my son was in pre-K they used a chart and stickers for every day of the week. If they got 5 stickers at the end of the school week they got a shiny new penny :)

We have used a sticker program in the past when my kids were younger. It was a great motivator for those regular routines and it was also helpful in learning about time and calanders. We have also used a marble jar for finding “good” behaviours. A marble would go in the jar whenever we caught them doing good things. When full there was a little prize or special activity.

Wow I see that little Jacob has evolved and improved a lot ... What a pride. When it reaches a certain amount of labels does it have a prize? I love the idea!!!!
