The #DailyChicken: What happens between 'adorable chick' stage, and adulthood? It's not pretty...

in #dailychicken5 years ago

For today's #DailyChicken, I am sharing with you some awkward chicks.

Chickens are so cute as babies. Adorable fluff-balls! Then, as adults, they are pretty and fluffy in their own way. There is an in-between time where they are just a little strange.

At around 5 weeks of age, they start losing their adorable fluff, and growing feathers. They end up looking patchy and sometimes half-naked. (Check out the black one on the left! Hard to see him? It's because he is embarrassed by his nakedness and is hiding behind his friends.)

Until their feathers grow in completely, they may look rather scruffy. They are still pretty cute in their own way though!

Lucky for them, their mothers will still watch over them for a few more weeks while they are 'transforming', and will keep their balding butts warm.

If you're wondering why their mouths are all hanging open, these photos were taken on a hot, Georgia-summer day, and they were hot and panting! Which is lucky for that ugly, nekkid guy in the front, if it were a cold day, he would have been miserable!

Oh my, I didn't realize they go through a semi-naked phase, lol Bless their hearts. Does it last very long? I bet it would come in very handy on those hot hot Georgia days. You have some beautiful bird @squishysquid. How many eggs do you get each day? I would loooooooove that! :)

Nope, thankfully not too long. 2 or three weeks and they look like mini adults.
Yes, thankfully it was hot! If it were chilly, then they would spend most of their time under their mamas floofy bellies. :D
Right now we aren't getting very many per day, about 5 I think, since it is winter and the shorter days trigger them to take a break from laying. They should pick up soon though, since the days are lengthening! Which is great! Home laid eggs are SO much better than grocery store eggs! I had to buy some recently, and everyone agreed, they were much less appetizing...

Only a mother would love that body not so;);)

Haha so true!

I am glad its hot for them at this stage of their development, I remember seeing the chickens my dad had at this stage it really is the period of their life when they hmm shall I say do not look their best

Haha so true. The only chickens that look worse are molting hens... I had some really ugly ones this fall! Unfortunately I did not remember to get photos of them, or I could share some uglier pictures, haha!

Ohh yes I had forgotten that stage and I agree thats real bad hair day material LOL

Our Fluffer got her name in that stage. She was the last in our crew to finish that stage and was fluffy longer than the others.

Aww! I like the name Fluffer. :D

You do know what a "fluffer" is, don't you?

fluffer ---> noun ---> a person employed on a pornographic film set to ensure that male actors are kept aroused

Erm... well I learned something new today...

Haha I suppose they are. ;)

Hahaha - teenagers are just awkward. But like you said, cute in their own way - even the human ones. The chicken kind for sure. 😂

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

You had me laughing at balding butts! Haha :P I think they are cute nonetheless. There are not many animals I can say are ugly when they are babies. Even some bugs are cute when babies... That's saying a lot lol.

Haha thanks!
So true... most babies are adorable. Perhaps the exception would be grubs, those are pretty gross to me, haha!
