DISCUSSION:

Notice the consistency in the commitment of the beloved (7:10; compare 6:3). Is there any thing we can learn from the wooing words of the beloved in 7:11-13? This passage must be of encouragement to many urban dwellers in Africa today among whom honeymoon planning is becoming a major part of wedding preparation. Isn't it challenging how carefully and explicitly this woman has made her plan to take her husband out for a lavish experience of her love? It is important for couples to take time out to the countryside where they can appreciate nature together and freely express their love.

Many rural dwellers will fully identify with the woman's experience in 8:1-2 since even married couples can hardly express their love publicly. It may be helpful for you and your spouse to take some time to identify those things that are capable of hindering your freedom to romance in your home and community. What practical things can we do in our churches to encourage Christian couples to ease out and pour their love on each other freely?

What warning is there in 8:4? It is God-ordained for married couples to romance each other without hesitation (Genesis 2:24-25; cf. Prov. 5:18-19). Unmarried young people, however, need to know that romance outside of marriage not only can be very harmful due to the fragile nature of human emotions, but is also sinful (Prov. 6:24-35)!

So what:

Reflect and respond effectively to those things your couple likes to strengthen your love relationship.

Thank you Lord, for the grace to love. Help me to be more committed to those who love me.
