Tambor (Drums - Trommel) in #danceweekend (English - Español - Deutsch)

in #danceweekend6 years ago (edited)

Since the end of the 70s, a kind of music was popularized throughout Venezuela, which until then was reserved for the cult of San Juan Bautista (John, the Baptist) and other saints of the devotion of the Afro-descendant communities: golpes de tambor or tambores (drum beats).

As you can see, when in Venezuela we speak about "tambor" (drum) or "tambores" (drums), we usually refer to a type of music and not specifically to the instrument.

The group Un Solo Pueblo was the first to commercially record this music. And since then the drum has become part of all the parties and the most important moments of the country's dance events and is one of the references of Venezuelan culture in the world. There are many groups that have brought the drum to the show halls, either as musical manifestations that maintain their traditional roots, like others that made mixtures that have been called "urban drum", which usually consists of the mixture of different Venezuelan drum rhythms and from other latitudes.

Of course, from that moment to here, many experiments have been made with these musical forms and have been integrated into many other genres. In my case, I have combined and exalted the drum elements that converge or combine with the cañonera music (which, as most of you already know, has been my main field of action in the last 35 years).

A little further back in time

The drum rhythms that exist in Venezuela, are direct descendents of slave communities brought from Africa by the big slave trade companies from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, where this business ended or changed its style.

Although the Spanish "owners" did not allow them to practice their cults, nor demonstrate culturally, the slaves and their descendants found a way to keep alive elements of their culture and many of them were merged with elements of Spanish culture and religion, as well as traditions or cultural elements of the indigenous people of the region. The Cumbes, which were free communities of "blacks" were spaces where these cultural manifestations ended up taking shape, giving way to new musical and cultural expressions.

As part of cultural syncretization arise the cults of San Juan, San Pedro and San Pablo, San Benito, Cruz de Mayo and many others, which are celebrated with the accompaniment of those musical expressions inherited.

Although, some of those songs, like the case of the Fulía, should not be danced because of its religious character, most of these rites, even if they have the same character, are made to dance.

One drum, many drums

Although one tends to generalize when talking about "drums" and there we pigeonhole all these manifestations, in reality they are many forms, very different from each other, of musical manifestations.

But this post of today is not intended to be an essay, but a reference about one of the music that is still enjoyed and danced in the Venezuelan celebrations.

To accompany this publication I have selected some songs that show different aspects of the "drum", the first corresponds to a studio recording, made by the group Wood, which I spoke to in Madera group, a watery pain. It has the traditional sound of the drum beat.

The second track is what is called the "repique" (peal) and is the beginning of the festival of San Juan in front of the Church, the day of John the Baptist. This one corresponds to the end of 2017, in the city of Curiepe, in Miranda State.

The following is a song recorded by Un Solo Pueblo, that although they were the ones who popularized this music in its traditional form, they have also contributed to its modernization with the inclusion of other musical instruments and new concepts in their arrangements.

Also I leave you one of the best voices of the Venezuelan present time, Betsayda Machado, performing "in small" a drum fragment from Aragua (Aragua State).

And finally, a production of 1977, but that in my opinion has been one of the most interesting proposals that have been made in relation to the drum. It is the group Un, dos, tres y fuera, with its track "San Juan, tambor y fuera".

The music is at the end of this publication.
