Tambor Urbano in DanceWeekend [English - Español - Deutsch]

in #danceweekend5 years ago (edited)

Today, May 10, the Venezuelan afro-Venezuelan day is celebrated in our country. This is like a commemoration of the armed movement led by José Leonardo Chirinos against Spanish rule in American lands on October 10. May 1795 and that was one of the precursor movements of American independence several years later.

Last year I had the pleasure of writing about a type of music that is a legacy of that Africanness and is an integral part of the Venezuelan and that for a long time is required in any celebration or parties: Tambores or drums (Tambor (Drums - Trommel) in #danceweekend (English - Español - Deutsch)).

However, when I spoke about this music, I was referring to its traditional manifestation, with its local and regional characteristics, of folkloric origin. But these musical forms had such an echo in the population that very soon began to emerge "urban" forms of it. That is to say, drums that mixed elements of different regions, as well as instruments of different localities and musical manifestations. They mixed native rhythms with foreign forms. These demonstrations usually took place in the cities, in the barrios and became part of the youth festivities.

So it happened with a group of young people that to animate the basketball games of their favorite team, the Miranda Panthers, they took their drums and put the party on the court. But one day they were invited to play in a marriage. They attended and because of the bad appearance they were wearing, because it was not really a group, the security guards did not allow them to enter and finally they did not perform there. But there arose the idea of combining the sound of the drum with the concept of cheerleaders and was born the first formal project that played this mixture of drums, under the name of Tambor Urbano.

Undoubtedly the mix of both elements, combined with a wardrobe that mixes the traditional with African fantasies, had a high impact that quickly made them the preferred group of all parties, not only in Caracas, since internationalization came from immediate way.

The most surprising thing is that the success of this group is based on private presentations and, above all, marriages. In fact, its internationalization came from the hand of the songstar José Luis Rodríguez, because it was at his wedding in Miami where the international projection began.

But this is a group that has a place in any type of event, so they have also been presented in all the television programs that one can imagine and are part of the great celebrations that take place in the country.

Héctor Silveira, founder and director of the group had the right vision to consider the work in a professional way and he got it.

I started to follow their trajectory from the first moment and I remember in a funny way that every time I called to ask Héctor the fare of the group, he said to me: "Well, now it's up because we played in José Luis' marriage... " On the next occasion: "Well, now we raise the rate because we already went on television." And so each call became an enumeration of achievements and successes.

I have not asked for a budget for a long time, but I imagine that now that they are an institution and one of the maximum references in Venezuelan musical activity, they must be through the roof.... And I think they deserve it!!!

Music at the end of this post!
