When we were in Sligo weeks ago, we also moved to Strandhill, on the west coast of the country-the next direct spot is over the ocean to America!

Sligo’s Geschichte

Sligo’s history

Due to the fact that Sligo is located in a strategically important location (on the road that leads to the north), the county was often the victim of attacks by clan chiefs as well as the English.
In 1588, ships of the Spanish Armada were destroyed by a storm at the wide beach of Streedagh.
Some Spaniards found by inhabitants succeeded in escaping the English and returning to Spain.
In 1570, the current county was founded. She also played a role in the Rebellion War in 1798; The French-Irish army managed to push back the British. At Carricknagat, a statue was erected in memory of Bartholemew Teeling for his role in this battle.
By the middle of the 19th century, many people had to leave the county during a particularly large famine.

Mammy Johnston’s

There have been three generations in the Byrne family to produce home-made ice cream in Sligo, and it all began with the well-known Mammy Johnston.

She was widowed at a young age and thus single parent with 3 children in the early 1930s.

Luckily she had a very entrepreneurial spirit and she saw the potential of Strandhill back then. So Mammy Johnstons opened her eponymous ice cream shop, which was one of the first in the country at the time.

The young Neil was sent by bike to Uncle Tommy to get the fresh milk from the cows in buckets for his grandmother.

At that time, Neil and his grandmother made the ice still by hand. It took them all day to cook the ice cream, and at the end of the day they cut the ice cream out of the big block of ice with a cheese wire cutter.

The children of the village came into the store and asked Mammy Johnston after their ice and she said to them, "I'm doing both of you to a special ice with Johnston's secret ingredient" and it was a special treat for each child young and old, as this Sligo Strandhill visited.
