Decentralized 2018 | Most exciting talks on November 15

Introduction

For the past few days I have been writing several articles about a Blockchain event that is going to begin next week, it is known as Decentralized 2018 and it will be held in Athens, Greece. Among the articles I have already written, there is the introductory post where I provided general information about this event, I then started to review the Decentralized 2018 iOS app, and finally I made an animated video to share the information related to this event in a very dynamic way.

Everyone who has researched even a little bit about blockchain technology, will surely know it has the potential to disrupt several major industries, even though the process is naturally slow, there are always new innovations being developed and implemented on a constant basis, and these types of summit are the place to inform the world about these new and intriguing creations.

This event is going to last for 3 days, but only on 2 are there going to be talks, the first day, November 14 is just the day where people can register themselves, and there is also a Welcome Cocktail to start the event on the right foot.

In my opinion, the most important part of events like this one, is the type of topics that are going to be discussed with the attendants, since there will be more than 70 industry leaders giving talks to the public, I decided to see which are the most exciting topics that are scheduled for discussion.

Blockchain for Financial Services

Starting early in the morning of the second day of the summit (which is when the talks begin), there is already a topic that will be discussed that can fairly be considered as exciting. Since the inception of Bitcoin, one of the goals of blockchain technology was to disrupt the financial industry by offering a new generation of decentralized currencies that couldn’t be controlled by any government, which means these new currencies could very well increase the individual economic freedom of the people, it has been also proved that blockchain technology is extremely useful when it comes to securing all sorts of records, including of course, financial records.

In the blockchain industry, there is the particular case of a company named Ripple that was able to provide improvements to the way traditional financial transactions are done, and there are many more innovations to come from other projects that will surely be discussed in Decentralized 2018.

Impact of Blockchain on Education

Later that same morning, there is going to be a talk regarding education. I think it is easy to come to a general consensus with every type of person that having a proper education is extremely important for the future of any individual, developing a good criteria is what makes people take good decisions, and the knowledge we can gather when receiving an education is a very important factor.

Regarding the impact of blockchain, in my opinion this technology could be used to store academic records in the most secure possible way, in fact, the University of Nicosia which is the entity organizing this event, is already publishing the diplomas of its students in the blockchain. This can be useful because it can be seen as a bulletproof way to protect this important data.

Blockchain and Supply Chain Management

I remember some months ago I wrote a post about a blockchain project from the pharmaceutical scene and I remember I was very impressed with all the different uses blockchain technology can have when it comes to improving the distribution of products.

Unfortunately, that project is not going to be present in Decentralized 2018, but I believe the potential impacts that blockchain can have in the supply chain management are very similar to the ones I learned when researching for that article, basically with blockchain technology it might get easier to implement a secure tokenization system where each product is assigned a particular token that can help make the tracking much easier, and with the use of smart contracts, payments could be automatically triggered when the distributed products have reached their destination, all of this using code that is open, verifiable, and can be audited.

The result will be a network that is much more secure compared to what is used today, and not only that, it could also function in a much more transparent and efficient way.
