Macro Photography With No Macro Equipment - Deranged Photography Contest

This week on Deranged Photography Contest the theme is Macro photography. As @derangedvisions said we could make a separate post and then post a photo in the comments HERE, i decided to give it a try.

I don't own any macro lenses and have no reverse macro rings but in theory i know that this could work, so why not give it a try.

Equipment used: Canon 600d, Helios 44-4, Canon 10-18, Sigma 18-35.

So the method is that you turn the lens backwards and just hold it to the camera. Sounds easy but it is really tricky as all is magnificated and a tiny movement and focus is missed. You focus by moving the whole camera back and forward.
The magnification depends from the focal length of the lens. Here some examples:

Canon 10-18mm at 10mm. At 10mm you need to be really close to the subject so another problem is that you are making a shadow with the lens. That is the reason, i think, on this photo above nothing is in focus. Small depth of field and slow shutter speed and the result is, for sure, a blurry photo.

If you want to try this, you need to be careful with the lens. Most of the lenses front side is wider than camera lens mount, so there is no problem. But for example Helios is not and it goes in a bit, so you need to be sure that the mirror will not hit the lens.

It is easier to do this on the old manual lenses because you can set the aperture manually. In the new lenses that i tested, when not connected to the camera, aperture on the lens is closed down, so you need a lot more light to shoot.

If you want, you can check out the video, but if you read all of above, you don't really need to :)
