#tbt: Alte Urlaubsfotos / Holiday-Photos [Ger/Eng]

I lik the idea of a Throwback Thursday with family photos because I often get my hands on something "from the past", whether it's photos of the family or something else - thanks to @ylich for starting it! This time it's about holidays in my youth. Not that different than today: snowy mountains in winter, seaside in summer...

Ich mag die Idee eines "Throwback Thursdays" mit Familienfotos, denn mir fällt öfter mal etwas "von früher" in die Hände - Dank an @ylich, der diesen #tbt ins Rollen gebracht hat! Heute geht es um alte Urlaubsfotos. Eigentlich nicht so viel Unterschied zu heute: Schneebedeckte Berg im Winter, Strand und Wasser im Sommer...

Meine Eltern waren nicht reich. Nennen wir es abgesichert - mein Vater war Beamter, also mit gesichertem Einkommen, und es gab keine Hypothek. Aber mit mehreren Kindern (ich bin das fünfte) gab es kein Geld für den Urlaub. Es wurden Besuche bei den Verwandten meiner Mutter gemacht und da diese in ländlichen Gebieten in Schleswig-Holstein wohnten, war das Abwechslung genug für die Kinder.

My parents weren't rich. Let's call it secured - my father was a public servant at the local municipality with a steady income and there was no mortgage. But with several children (I'm the fifth) and my mother not working, there was no money for going on holidays. There were visits to my mother's relatives and with them living in rural areas in the most northern part of Germany, that was entertaining enough for the children.

Der erste echte Familienurlaub war 1964, bevor ich geboren wurde. Die vier Kinder (~16 bis 4 Jahre alt) wurden im VW Käfer verstaut und es ging dann für vier Wochen nach Südfrankreich. Fragt mich nicht, wo sie das Gepäck untergebracht haben! Es war ein Wohnungstausch, irgendwo in einer Kleinstadt, und sie waren die ersten ausländischen Touristen dort. Leider gibt es davon keine Fotos - mein Vater hat damals hauptsächlich Dias gemacht und die müssen wir noch digitalisieren.

The first real family holiday came before I was born, in 1964. The four children (~16 to 4 years old) were stowed away in the VW Beetle and then they drove to the south of France for a four week stay. Don't ask me where they put the luggage! That was a house swap, somewhere in a small town and they were the first foreign tourists there. Unfortunately there are no photos of that - my father made mainly slides then and we still have to digitise them.

Aber jetzt zu den Feiertagen wo ich Fotos zum Vorzeigen habe! Es war natürlich Urlaub am Meer. Die Nordsee ist keine 300 Kilometer entfernt und es gab günstige Unterkünfte. Obwohl noch mehrmals Haustausch gemacht wurde und wenn man sich auf dem folgenden Bild das Gebäude ansieht, das man hinter uns sieht - das war definitiv nicht erstklassig oder luxuriös!

But now to the holidays I've got photo to show! There were holidays at the seaside, of course. The North Sea wasn't even 300 kilometers away and there was affordable housing available. Though some house swaps were still done and if you look at the following picture at the building you see behind us - that definitely wasn't first class or luxurious!

Der erste Urlaubstag: meine Mutter ist eher erschöpft, meine große Schwester ist mal wieder am Schmollen und ich scheine von der unbekannten Umgebung etwas eingeschüchtert zu sein. Und ja, wir Norddeutschen trugen Lederhosen - aus ganz praktischen Gründen: die muss man nicht waschen, nur ausklopfen und ab + an mit der Wildlederbürste dran ;)

The first vacation day: my mother rather exhausted, my bigger sister's in a strop again and I seem to be rather intimitated by the unfamiliar surroundings And yes, we were wearing lederhosen - for practical reasons: you don't have to wash them ;)

Winterurlaub in den österreichischen Alpen - inklusive Schlittenfahrt. Ich kann mich nicht an diese erinnern, aber ich erinnere mich an eine, als ich acht Jahre alt war: die ruhige weiße Landschaft mit den einzigen Geräuschen, die das Knirschen des Schnees, die Geräusche des Pferdes und die kleinen Glöckchen an seinem Geschirr sind.

Winter holiday in the Austrian Alps - including a sleigh ride. I can't remember this but I remember one when I was eight years old: the quiet white landscape with the only sounds being the crunching of the snow, the sounds of the horse and the small bells on its harness.

Ich bin nicht auf diesem Bild, aber so erinnere ich mich an diese Ferien im Leutaschtal: das weite Tal mit so viel Schnee, dass ich bei einigen der geräumten Wege kaum darüber schauen konnte.

I'm not on this picture but that is how I remember these holidays: the wide valley with so much snow that in some of the cleared walks I could barely look over it.

Wahrscheinlich eine typisch deutsche Sache: das Bauen von Sandburgen. Mein Vater kehrt hier zu seinen Wurzeln zurück, sein Vater und andere Angehörige waren Maurer. Dieses und die folgenden Bilder wurden in Scharbeutz an der Ostsee aufgenommen.

Probably a typical German thing: building sandcastles. My father is going back to his roots here, his family used to be in construction. This and the following pictures were taken in Scharbeutz on the Baltic Coast.

Klar zu erkennen: ich war nicht sehr "mädchenhaft" und glücklicherweise war so etwas meinen Eltern auch nicht wichtig. Ich hatte immer schöne Ferien - ich war und bin eine Wasserratte.

No, I wasn't a "girly" girl and fortunately my parents didn't care about such things. I had great holidays - I'm what the Germans call "water rat", someone who loves being in the water.
