The Discord App. It has really helped me.

Hey there Steemians!

The Discord app is an important part of community-building on the Steem blockchain.

Right now there are people talking about all manner of things throughout Discord. There are writers groups, veterans groups, mutual aid groups and groups dedicated to gambling. Discord offers a vast landscape for social connection.

I have been using the Discord app for a few months now to access the Steemit Creators’ Guild, their proofreaders help make posts readable.

I also used Discord to connect with PALnet and the Steem Star Network - these channels broadcast Steemit based radio shows. While listening to these shows and by clicking through the Steemitsphere I learned about the existence of groups on Discord which support their members through curation and post promotion. It is a little intimidating to join these communities as a relative outside. At first it’s like sitting at a table with all of the cool kids in the cafeteria, scary! After not too long, though, you find out that they are just normal folks too.

There are folks with huge wallets in these social groups on Discord, folks who can majorly affect the payout of your post with just one vote. There are also folks like me who are handing out our dust votes. All of these different Steemians sharing chat rooms and interest groups allows people to connect with each other off of the blockchain in a more casual environment. If you have been online for a long time, you may be reminded of Yahoo chat, or the old AOL chat rooms.

Among the Discord Channels which have dramatically affected my blog on Steemit are the BuddyUp channel, and the STEEM Engine channel.

These two groups work around similar principles of mutual aid. When you comment and upvote another member’s blog then your blog becomes eligible for promotion in certain channels. Basically in these groups the members create more engagement in a meaningful way by building systems around mutual aid.

Aside from fostering community and dialogue, Discord also offers a space for the use of bots. The Discord bots I use are information-gathering bots. They inform me when certain keywords are used on Steemit so I can engage with posts about homelessness or anarchy for instance. They also keep track of users, so I can read the content of my favorite bloggers when they post things. Bots inform me when I have received upvotes or if I have been mentioned. The bots on Discord are pretty darned useful.

Discord is an important tool of the Steemit community. It is a place you can go to with questions about the blockchain and find friendly witnesses who will answer your questions.

Just ask in general chat, as witnesses can be overwhelmed with direct messages on Discord. There are people around the Discord channels who know all of the ins and outs of Steemit. There are places specifically set up to help new folks to understand how to use Steemit. Whether it’s a Phillipino server where folks can network with others in the native language, or groups where folks talk about their crochet projects, Discord is a place to connect with people who are actively sharing the interests you have on Steemit.

Thanks for reading this far!

Thanks to Steemit Creators’ Guild for their proofreaders.

Saw you in PAL MSP Radio today! I'll have to look into some of these other channels. Thanks man!

There are quite a few out there. More than a person can really engage with. It's just a matter of finding the groups you enjoy.

Can you hook a link to the buddyup channel and the steem engine channel?

Hey bud, I get messages through GinaBOT whenever someone says BuddyUP.

BuddyUP : (https://steemit.com/buddyup/@buddyup/you-are-in-the-safe-zone)

Thanks!

Hi there @tawasi! Thanks for this post on Discord - I think it is one of the most valued para-Steemit applications for success on Steemit! I think you did a really great job showing WHY! :)
(and thanks for tagging Welcome Wagon!)
