Bret and Eric Weinstein, Pivotal Discussions

The Brothers Weinstein

This is one of the most superb and intellectually challenging conversations I’ve witnessed in a long time, including my 7 long expensive university years. An absolute must-see for anyone interested in true progress and free thinking. Bret Weinstein (progressive Biologist exiled by a liberal arts college) with his brother Eric Weinstein (mathematician and managing partner of Thiel Capital) moderated by Dave Rubin (gay comedian and desperate guardian of free speech) on the current environment of speech/censorship and the steps needed to build a freer and more productive society.

If anyone is willing to sit through these 3 hours and parse apart the discussion topics, I’d love to pick your brain publicly or privately.

Major Points

I can’t just leave this post at my praise since I’ll just be profiteering off Rubin’s superb work here. And I also want to highlight a few key principles that many are likely to not know from just watching this video or glazing through it as part of 3 long hours.

First off, it is crucial to point out that Eric Weinstein is managing partner of Thiel Capital, one of the most successful VC firms and one that is openly endorsing Bitcoin/cryptocurrency. If you’re in tune with daily crypto updates, you know that his partner and company’s figure Peter Thiel is one of the biggest proponents in the field. Eric is vocal and public supporter of rethinking many of the country’s systems, including that of left-leaning education that has caused a wave of irrational progressivism in this country.

Eric, a mathematical genius and enviable investor, is joined by his brother, Bret Weinstein. Bret is well known in the sciences and was made (in)famous from an incident last year of being “exiled” from his university in Washington state - Evergreen. He was done so because he expressed concern over a year event when people on campus are divided by color/race and in the instance of last year, all white people were discouraged from not coming to campus for a day so that POC students could ‘experience’ what it would be like without “white oppression.”

Yea…

This post won’t dwell on the cultural marxism of that event. I simply wanted to contextualize where these two come from and why they ended up on Rubin’s show. For some more history on these two, I highly recommend checking out Bari Weiss’ article from the New York Times which dubs the, “Intellectual Renegades” alongside Dave Rubin, Jordan Peterson, and others. As someone that comes from and has roots in the left, this conversation fascinates me and the initial explorations to "know my enemy" have opening up new avenues of discourse that I have not had the chance to engage before.

The reason I bring these two up in the context of Steemit is not the social justice aspect that I think is eroding principles of freedom (I’ll tackle that in a subsequent post) but to highlight the ultra-rational that these two brother bring to the discourse. It is back-breaking. And this type of thought is critical to encourage in the arena of cryptocurrencies.

Eric actually mentions BTC, even using the word “bubble” alongside it, but pay attention to the context in which he references it. It’s pretty incredible.

Anyway, give it a watch and let me know what you think! Steem on!

Downloaded and will give it a listen later. Looks interesting.

I finished reading The Righteous Mind the other day after your post about that, and it was awesome. The parts that relate to descriptive moral analysis were huge, I feel like I can comprehend morality way better now thanks to the idea of the 5/6 axis of moraliy.

The Weinstein bros are certainly smart dudes with good points, although very smug to the point of being kinda hard to stomach in large doses. I'll give this one a try.

I think the most interesting thing about the entire Thiel crew is how quiet they are - while most people believe that making noise = having influence, the Thiel corner of the world is more focused on quietly acting behind the scenes. Lately I think that side of things, creating big change WITHOUT the veneer of extreme public relations, is an area that can be tapped into for extreme improvement both for me and for many steemians in general.

I'll give this one a try... will let you know if I get deep into it.

Heheh yea, their way of explaining can come off as needlessly drawn out and a bit smug. But when you parse it apart, you realize they do so to make sure every point is rational and comes across without assumption.

That's a great point on the 'Thiel effect.' There is this conflation now that big noise means big change, whereas that can be a tremendous distraction from real progress at times.
