The strimmer lives on!

in #diy6 years ago

Like many people my two most used garden tools (other than myself) are my lawnmower and electric strimmer

The strimmer was bought for me as a present and did an ok job for about 6 months, one thing it lacked was the power of petrol or mains strimmer or weed wacker but being cordless and rechargeable made up for this.

Unfortunately about 6 months in the battery started to give up to the point within a few months after it was useless. As it was a gift I didn't have the receipt to pursue a replacement/repair and i'm not one to throw things away if i can fix them.

Due to other interests and work i have quite a range of lithium polymer batteries in different voltages and capacities

So a quick raid of the parts boxes and i was able to get this knocked together meet captain strimmy 2.0

I didn't want to damage the actual strimmer as if i did ever replace it i could sell/trade it minus the battery. This Mod involved taking out the innards of the battery and soldering on the xt60 (yellow) connectors to take the batteries.

A bit of velcro added and i had a working strimmer again!

Also a major benefit i had the two following things as a result of the repair/modification

Well over twice as much run time going from 1.5ah capacity to 4.4ah
The batteries are wired in series giving a total of 24 volts fully charged so the increase in power is amazing much more usable than when on 18v

Due to my style of garden work the strimmer gets used for no more than a minute at a time so it has plenty of time to cool down between uses, one concern i had with upping the voltage would be blowing the motor but its lasted a full season so far and hopefully will last many more!

Have you ever repaired anything that many would junk, or upcycled some thing cool, I’d love to see/hear if you have

As always thanks for stopping by and having a look at my ramblings, if you think it’s worth it consider an upvote, resteem or follow if you don’t already. However if you only do one thing leave a comment and say hello 👍

All the best

I've never repaired one but I have definitely burned the motor out of one! Haha! Used a small electric one to try to clear a friend's backyard. It didn't go well.
