Busted Tractor

in #diy5 years ago

My old tractor sprung a coolant leak in the water pump, so I spent the afternoon taking it apart. This is a 1951 Ford 8N that has probably never been rebuilt and spent the first 60 years of its life outdoors. She is in very good shape considering her age.

This is actually her second coolant leak. The first one was in the radiator, but I dumped a can of Barr's Stop Leak in there and it worked instantly. Now I'm going to replace both the radiator and the pump in one operation.

The first task is getting the sheet metal off. It would have been easy except that the fuel tank is attached to the top of the hood. Even with the tank half empty it was heavy.

Having the fuel tank above the engine is sometimes a bit of trouble in hot weather. The fuel gets heated by the engine and can start to boil! I was having periodic trouble with the engine overheating, too. I hope that the new cooling system will do a better job.

Here she is with the radiator and pump removed. I have new parts in the mail, but she will just have to sit like this for a few days.

Thankfully, these tractors are still being made overseas and good quality parts from India are cheap to buy.

Cheers, Professor Bromide

She may be an oldie, but she sounds like a goody! For a tractor that's gone that long without being rebuilt to just have a coolant leak says a lot about how well it was built. Glad you can still get parts. How's the drivetrain look?

The gears are in good condition which was surprising because the transmission was full of water. I think these machines are amazing. No wonder they are popular in third world countries where everyone needs to be self sufficient.
