Found This Super Rare Item On The Curbs Last Night - What The Heck Is It, And Why Did It Cost $790 New?

in #diy5 years ago (edited)

I had a solid haul last night including some high end vintage electronics, a big bag of Legos, 2 vintage Beatles LPs (one rare), an antique Finnish Arabia mug, an Apple AirPort, a high end commercial vacuum, other toys, and an empty Hermes box.

I also found about 100 other vintage records, tons of old books, vintage kitchen appliances, and several other vintage electronics, but it didn't make sense for me to take them. I left money on the table, but I have to pick wisely. I even found some old porn magazines, but left those far behind because I couldn't reach @blewitt in time to see if he'd want them. He must've had his hands full. Yes, you can literally find everything...

I also found this case full of stuff below as the biggest winner. It's nearly complete and in very high demand as a discontinued item. I'm confident I can sell it for $300-$500 due to its extreme scarcity and previous sales of similar used/incomplete sets by the same maker ranging over $800! I haven't decided my price point yet, but it's a good problem to have for free inventory that'll move fast. I can pick any target here with virtually zero competition.

Know what it is?

A closer look.

Even closer!!

Hopefully this presents some type of challenge.

Start looking around for overlooked things that have value, and you'll start seeing green.

I used to "never see anything" either, but I eventually started paying attention.

I'll keep showing examples to help.

DAMN THIS GUYS FINDS REAL STUFF!
YOU MUST BE A RICH MAN BOY! :D

I would also like to guess that it has something to do with locksmithing.

Why is Taraz allowed to be so smart? This is unfair and I demand he be taken down to our level... 😛 miss your face.. and seriously.. so smart

Don't tell anyone... The trick is....

Alcohol

Ding ding. You've unlocked the answer. It's pin/parts supply set to make high end security locks. Well done.

Ha, yay!!.. sorry it took me so long to get to the comment.

You’ve been named in a new challenge if you want to keep rolling the dice. However, you’re free to leave on top to preserve your perfect score.

Another 'Hi!' sent to you from @llfarms :)

When such a Steem legend as yourself drops by my little world here, it's a good day. Thanks for the nice gesture!

Hey Matt! It sounds like @llfarms really loved your gift!
The drop by was at her request and she has done so much for us and your gift was so thoughtful, it seemed her ask was the least we could do.
I hope more steemians come by. Your world is awesome! You probably learn about things most of us have never heard of. Best of luck and finds to you!

This made me happy ☺️❤️

Hi @steemmatt, @llfarms sent me to say "Hi", so

HI!

I see you and I are somewhat kindred spirits. I will always
Keep an eye out on the curb side for stuff other people
Have thrown away, found a lot of good stuff that way.
Mostly furniture and rugs, nothing of particular
Value (as far as I know) but valuable and
Useful TO ME, so I use it. I've been
Accused of being a "Hoarder"
I don't think I'm quite THAT
Bad (yet) haha...followed
Upvoted and resteemed.

Nice to meet you. Keep hunting and you'll eventually find a book with a bitcoin address and private keys in it to make you rich. The amount of stuff on my curbs is insane, which is why I focus on reselling it, but for most people it's plenty good enough to grab stuff you can use for yourself. It saves you money and time, helps you feel good about salvaging something, and it helps the environment. Nothing to recline your car seat for at all!! Stay tuned for more.

These days I don't have time nor space for more "stuff" but I
Still keep my eyes out as I'm driving along. I live in
Atlanta and its environs, and people in places
Like Smyrna and Decatur throw away
Some insanely good stuff.
Keep on Truckin' my
New Friend.

So this was worth $790 when it was new.... what is it, some kind of crypto or something? XD XD

Anyway I'm glad that nice people like you are around for lele :).

I've seen you leave some very nice comments for her too again and again, so thank you too. We're on the same team.

Someone got very close to the answer above. It's actually a pin/parts supply set to make high end security locks. It's a discontinued set, so it'll still sell for $300-$500 because it's hard to find!

$300 to $500?!!!
Whoa then it is really a treasure!
Lucky lucky :D.

I tend to view it as effort and dedication paying off when they meet opportunity. I'm very committed to saving items from being destroyed when they're put out on the curbs in my city near my apartment. It's fun and very rewarding.

This was only one thing I found that one night! I found several hundred dollars of other stuff, as well as a bunch of good stuff tonight. It's a never ending supply of household items free for me to take that most people walk by all evening long and don't care about.

I've sold an obscene amount of recycled items you wouldn't believe. I even quit my full time job to do this and go thrifting because the money is enough to live on, and it gives me so much more freedom and satisfaction to get involved in other things outside of my old career.

I really respect what you are doing, trying to make use of things that others have thrown away, essentially that is even better than recycling. And you actually make good money for doing that, which is great because these kind of activities should be rewarding not only on the inside but also monetary wise hahaha.

as i told lele, i think this is some master dwarf's crafting tools. you should return it to uh.... Moria or someplace like that.

(is cooooooooool looking) (ionno what it is though) :D

It's actually the components they used to assemble elven armor. Some of them also glow blue when orcs are nearby. You were SO close!! You have good imagination.

I am feeling your challenge and I don't have a clue. I'm staying tuned in to find out.

Thanks for playing. It's pin/parts supply set to make high end security locks.

Thanks for the answer, now I can sleep better.

This is awesome! So what do you do? You just go around looking for this stuff, or is this from garage sales?

He breaks into people's garages.

Yea I got that Finnish Arabia mug from your garage, but there was literally nothing else for me. Just a bunch of weird adult swings or something!

My wife won't let me keep them in the house anymore.

On a side note, some of the Arabia plates sell for heaps here too.

From initial research on the distinct animal pattern, and confirmed by the age of the other stuff in the bag, I think it's from 1967. The only match I find online is listed for $209 with many watchers, but mine has a hairline crack in it. I may just lob it up for $90 and see what happens.

if you DM me a message,

I can ask my wife to source it in Finnish for you.

I usually freecycle in my neighborhood in my city (no dumpters). I can live completely off of what I find laying out on the curbs on recycling night in clear plastic bags, loose, or in cardboard boxes when I resell it. I live in a big city with a lot of wealth, and lots of wasteful/lazy people.

I've found and sold thousands of items, kept some, and recycled tons of packaging for my shipments. I thrift from time to time as well, but more when it's convenient.

Feel free to look back in my blog for my main upcycling/thrifting chains which have links back for the last couple of months. I've been posting on this stuff here for over 1.5 years, so you'll find plenty of inspiration and ideas if this is appealing... or just stay tuned for more.

That's awesome man! To be able to find stuff like this on the curbs is crazy! I'm getting into flipping myself after being inspired by GaryV's trash talk episodes. But this stuff that you're finding is solid gold! Right on man, I'll definitely be scrolling through your feed and keeping an eye out for upcoming finds.
