Coughing is a quite common symptoms among general population. A wide variety of causes are behind this symptom. Here is a short list of causes  cough; some of which may lead to long standing or chronic cough:
1. Post nasal drip
2. Asthma 
3. GERD ( gastro esophageal reflux disease)
4. COPD ( chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
5. Medication related cough
6. Pneumonia 
7. Whooping cough (pertussis)
