From the distinctive Travis picking to the simple verse, chorus, verse, chorus format, this song is both simple and complex and melancholy and hopeful all packaged into one truly unforgettable number and delivered by its original composer and lyricist, Ralph McTell with sincerity and respect.

If you hadn't realised by now, I love this fifty-year-old masterpiece.

This article from the BBC is linked to the Radio 4's programme 'Soul Music' and talks to people to whom this song resonates in an often deep and powerful fashion.

For me, it's not only a signature tune to homelessness but a powerful reminder of how debilitating loneliness can be. As someone who has often been, by personal preference, alone and not lonely, and sometimes alone not by personal choice and extremely lonely, the lyrics of this song have often circled around my mind and made me sat up and look around to see the positives and understand there were always people much worse off than myself.

It's just a beautiful song on so many levels.

Here is Ralph McTell performing it fairly recently in London.
