The US Food and Drug Admіnіѕtrаtіоn has аррrоvеd a nаѕаl ѕрrау соntаіnіng Eѕkеtаmіnе - a соuѕіn of the аnеѕthеtіс ketamine - аѕ a nеw medicine against dерrеѕѕіоn.

It has ѕhоwn to be еffесtіvе, especially fоr реорlе thаt dоn't еxреrіеnсе аnу роѕіtіvе еffесtѕ frоm thе 'regular' treatment against dерrеѕѕіоn - which іѕ 1/3 оf аll patients.

It іѕ the fіrѕt antidepressant drug іn dесаdеѕ tо ореrаtе in a соmрlеtеlу new wау - it wоrkѕ wіthіn hоurѕ not wееkѕ, аѕ with сurrеnt mеdісаtіоnѕ.

Trеаtmеntѕ will only tаkе place іn a сеrtіfіеd hоѕріtаl; раtіеntѕ wіll be mоnіtоrеd сlоѕеlу for ѕеvеrаl hоurѕ аftеr rесеіvіng the drug.

If уоu'vе еvеr tаkеn kеtаmіnе as a rесrеаtіоnаl drug, it wіll рrоbаblу nоt surprise уоu thаt ѕоmе оf the mоѕt common ѕіdе effects іnсludе

  • disassociation
  • dіzzіnеѕѕ
  • vеrtіgо
  • ѕеdаtіоn
  • fееlіng drunk

Of соurѕе, thіѕ саuѕеѕ a lоt оf соntrоvеrѕу аmоng ѕсіеntіѕtѕ. Many wonder if a drug lіkе Kеtаmіnе ѕhоuld bе mаdе ассеѕѕіblе to ѕuсh a lot оf реорlе, bесаuѕе оf thе роѕѕіblе nеgаtіvе еffесtѕ оf long-term use, еvеn thоugh іt іѕ uѕеd аѕ a sedative in hоѕріtаlѕ since the 1970'ѕ.

I can't wait until this will become available here. For once, I'll be happy that I'm suffering from depression ;0)

Thanks for the news link, but this smells of another lame attempt to medicate a condition that requires deep personal and psychological methods to heal.

I don't speak about depression lightly, but my own method was to do precisely the opposite of what everyone suggests - I went deeper into it ;-) I figured that any deep problem had a solution, so went on a quest, just like a game but for real. Meditation and dream practice helped, but they needed a focus - a mission. It worked... but most don't want to know about it! If anybody does then fire away.

I couldn't agree with you more about the fact that medication is just a way to take away the consequences, but not deal with the cause. It's like driving your car, seeing that the little warning light for the fuel lights up and going to the shop to have them remove the little light instead of refueling your car, lol.

Personally, I have refused all medication, and I'm trying to work on the deeper psychological cause - but that's not a quick fix. I realize it will take time to get things worked out.

but they needed a focus - a mission.

What exactly do you mean by that?

I mean that the mind can do some extraordinary things, but it must be told that something is important - so important that it is working on the problem in the background, all the time. That's how sometimes an inspiration seems to appear from nowhere - it isn't really from nowhere, just that the inner process has found something worthy of conscious attention. A solution.

It is thus important to write everything down - to articulate the problem in as lucid a way as possible. To write down the good ideas and the dead ends, the experiments that look promising. For me it was a mixture of hypnosis, dream work, depth psychology and eventually Tibetan Buddhism - but they are all just names for techniques, some of which overlap in spite of having different vocabulary.

They all also require some level of mastery of both concentrated focus and allowing altered states to play themselves out. But without a driving force, even a blind confidence, then it is easy to wander round the labyrinth.

I just assumed there was a way out - and that it was probably not the same as the way in.

I heard about this on the news. It will only be used under doctor supervision for critical/emergency cases of depression. There's always THC btw lol

Yes, there are very strict rules. Which is a good thing, because you can't just give the guy next door a ketamine-based spray, lol. However, it is just a matter of time before it will find its way to the black market, I think.

I think its dangerous..... what if

It is under very strict control - you can only get treatment in a hospital, and will be supervised a couple of hours afterward. Can't wait for the first hospital robbery, though, lol. Things like this always find their way to the black market...

However, I don't see how it would be more dangerous than the regular drugs against depression, since most of them have 'suicidal feelings' as a side effect... Bad idea to give something like that to people who are already suffering from depression...

Thats is so true, and its well worth trying, i would have thought that Holland had this already we are so liberal

Google search results show there has been some research, but it's not used yet, from what I can see

Over the last 50 years I've tried most things for depression and found nothing that cures it. Not tried ketamine yet though...

I must admit, my first reaction was asking why they didn't use MDMA - because I truly believe that can make a change - it does for me. But the effects are only temporary, and afterwards you feel worse.
From what I read, Ketamine can alter the way you think...

I'm not an expert on the matter, however - I only found out about Ketamine being used against depression 10 minutes before I published this post. I knew it was used as a sedative, and apparently it can also be used when you suffer from a migraine.

However, I am familiar with depression. been suffering from it for a couple of years. I refuse all 'classic' drugs that they want to subscribe me, though. I don't get why they are giving people who suffer from depression drugs that have 'suicidal feelings' as a side effect...

Done most of the recreational drugs in the 70s and found they worked while I was on them but wore off and I was back to it. Did all the doctor drugs and found they made me suicidal and would never advocate taking them. Been doing meditation for 40 years for an hour a day and it helps. Done heaps of other things like tapping, massage, acupuncture, and so many more I can't remember them all right now. But what I find is that nothing works for long and sooner or later it comes back most times severe. I've been hearing of a new thing where your brain is wired up and electric is tickled in, but not tried that so can't say...

Should be great news for depression sufferers and as far as the drug Ketamine goes, it is used as a date rape drug over here. They spike girls drinks with it. Bad news!

You will only get treatment in a hospital, under strict supervision.
I had never heard of ketamine being used as a date rape drug. Just did a Google search, and apparently you're right - it is used in some cases...

It was often in our news and bad here in South Africa my friend!
