We’ve heard about the consequences of mass personal data mining — from manipulating elections to exploiting people’s neuroses. Companies keep basing their business models around tracking their users and selling that data. Data breaches and unsavory uses of all this information clearly infringe personal privacy, but what’s the alternative beyond becoming a cave-dwelling hermit?

One that’s come up time after time is the Personal Data Store (PDS) model. This post looks into some leading solutions and assesses the prospects.

Are they trying to monetize it for the person whose data it actually is?

Personal data stores focus on privacy. But the free services and even paid ones (to a lesser extent) monetize your data. If they have access to your data, they can monetize your data. Whether they actually do it or net is a coin flip most of the time. Google certainly monetize everything. It's basically a Faustian bargain to use Google and FB.

https://mega.nz is a good centralized service with few free functions.

Dotcom has said that data on the Mega service will be encrypted client-side using the AES algorithm. Since Mega does not know the encryption keys to uploaded files, they cannot decrypt and view the content. Therefore, they cannot be responsible for the contents of uploaded files.[37] Dotcom stated that encrypting files allows them to work with a larger number of data hosting companies around the world, decreasing the likelihood of a Megaupload-style seizure of servers by one government. He mentioned in an interview with Ars Technica that "Each file will be kept with at least two different hosters [sic], [in] at least two different locations," and "That’s a great added benefit for us because you can work with the smallest, most unreliable [hosting] companies. It doesn’t matter because they can’t do anything with that data."[38]

It's funny cause now that I think about it a bit, it's probably barely worth a few bucks per person, if even that, but together, all our data is $$$...

Very nice post. This is a big post about online user's personal security matter.
