Amazing Animals! What can I do?

Its hard to understand what we are dealing with unless you watch the video, but I can't believe this is healthy, for the bird at least!

I really should go to bed at an earlier hour, but I did score 4th in Asher's Engagement League this week, so I am thrilled about that!

Please let me know if you have ever seen anything like this before!

Steem on, towards Love and Light!

My video is at DLive

Sort:

Cardinals are very territorial. They will attack their reflection thinking it's another cardinal. Get a plastic owl and put it outside by the window. That might scare it away.

Fantastic suggestion! It is on my to-try list, and you can expect an update! Thanks for sticking with me @konelectric!

My mon use to put a plastic owl on the garden fence post to scare off cridders. Not a controled study, so I don't know how well it worked.

Anecdotal evidence is still useful for me in this case, since it gives me something to try. Also, I am very grateful that you keep watching my videos, each day it feels less and less like I am talking to myself! Cheers!

LOL :-) @snook's fav too! Hahahaha. Good luck with your new sleep pattern.

Crazy right!? The easiest thing to do would be just to go to bed at a reasonable hour, but between a reasonable hour and the hours that I eventually do nod off, I get some of my best commenting done on Steem!

hehehehehehehe

sorry..........

we tried hanging plastic bags on the windows and it didn't work. THAT same window to be exact.

I am going to hang a GIANT EAGLE replica!

I seen small birds attack hawks but not Eagles. But they're definitely scared of owls.

My internet connection is acting up. I can't play the video. I'll try later.

Congrats on your placement in The League! It's been ages since I was at top 10 at least. I hope I can get back there again.

I hope it does work later!

I have been focusing a lot of energy into engagement, and I have seen huge dividends! New friends, followers and fun, I have read more articles than I have in such a long time! I won't be able to do this every week of my life, but it sure is fun while I can. I am sure there will be such a week, or group of weeks for you as well :)

I hope I can find some more time to do some engagement. I have missed a lot of people who are fun to interact with.

Good luck on your engagement. May you be able to continually do so :)

I always say that steem should add to your life not take away from it. I have had times where I have had to slow down, even stop posting. It can't become a 'job' for me or I will lose interest.

But when we do slow down, if we look forward to when we can come back and talk to this friend or that, I think it is a great indication that we are building a real community here!

Congratulations on being 4th in Asher's engagement league! Lots of hard work put into curating! Cardinals not only attack their reflections, if they can see you behind the glass they will also attack. Weird birds. We had a woodpecker that used to come and bang out his beat on our metal mailbox. I guess he liked the amplified sounds. Perhaps the cardinal is bringing you a message? I get up early now because we have a noisy flock of parrots fly over the house twice a day. Once at 4:30 am and again around 5 pm. Used to drive me crazy in the morning...

Used to? Now you just became a morning person! You are amazing!

Birds are hilarious, and special. We want to feature birds, birding, birdwatching, become good at it, honor them, use them as kind of a placeholder for the environment in our recent efforts (more such content will be coming out soon from us, for now @ecoinstante is working hard on that).

And so here we come down to Florida, and there is a bird slamming itself against our window! Is the universe a hilarious huckster or what?!

PS - thank you! I'm not sure for how long I can keep it up, but I am having a blast responding to everything and commenting on even more ;-p

Commenting and engagement are addicting! Can't wait to see what you are going to do with birding. They are such fascinating creatures.

Birds are wonderful and come in such fascinating varieties. Besides your flock of toucans, do you get any fancy colorful ones down by you?

Yes, we do. We get McCaws, parrots, mot-mots, doves and my favourites, hummingbirds.

AHHH!!!! Yess, we love motmots and hummingbirds! Truthfully @ecoinstante could love the greyest dove seemingly equally, but of course I love the colorful ones and the ones with personalities!

We have a beautiful couple of motmots, the aequatorialis, that live in a cliff on the edge of our farm, they frequently come up and dance and talk to each other looking for fruit and insects. They are like complete alien visitors, talking in their strange language, it is so amazing and beautiful, we always stop whatever we are doing, entranced.

My patio is surrounded by fruit trees, vines and flowers. So I am visited by hummingbirds frequently and the motmots and parrots love my papaya! I have yet to eat one of my pitaya as the birds always eat them from the backside where I don't notice the neat little hole! LOL

How fantastic is that! How large is the area you have enclosed? Are we talking small garden or hacienda?

OH MY GODDESS. That bird! About halfway through I was cringing and thought it had stunned itself and fell, but then it started again. 😂 I would recommend getting light reflecting shiny things - like those hanging decorations that spin, or metal pinwheels. The moving light should (hopefully) scare it away from that window. My parents had birds building nests in the hood of their car - repeatedly - and they would realize it when driving, they smelled cooked eggs. They tried the fake owl and it did nothing. I read about pinwheels online on a gardening site, so they lined their driveway like it was an airport landing strip with metal shiny pinwheels. It worked! No more birds building nests in the car.

Fantastic ideas, going on the list! I actually know where to find pinwheels, I think an owl would be something that we might by chance see at a rummage or something.

I know right? @ecoinstante has gone out several times, thinking she is going to find it collapsed in the bushes, but it keeps coming back.

Our strategy this week is to get up before the bird to do some walking and stretching. Let's have a productive week! Blessings to you and all your roommates :)

Oh good heavens! He really body slams your window!

This Baltimore Oriole has been annoying me for the past three years! For two or three weeks he sits on the window sill and pecks at his reflection. He has to be giving himself a headache!

image

I love this picture! Awesome shot, I think he wants to come in for a cup of tea!

I would invite him in for one if he would only stop being so annoying!

Its just the way he is looking at you! I can't believe this shot! The bird has as much personality as one of our chickens, and its just a still photograph. Amazing.

I will let you know if any of the suggestions that I receive work. Metal pinwheel or a plastic owl so far are on the 'to-try' list.

Cheers!

I think what you see in his eyes is brain damage from pounding on the window! It's just signs of a concussion!😜 I do love the oirioles and spend a fortune every year on oranges and grape jelly for the feeder! I love watching them bring their fledglings and teach them how to eat at the feeder. It was a successful year for them. More young Orioles than I have ever seen!

Fantastic! We have a mountain oriole down by us - icterus crysater - he is one of the hard workers on our farm that likes to eat both fruits and insects. We leave them some fruits as a reward for eating all the bugs.

I have noticed a lot more awareness of birds and birding worldwide, I think this is a very great development! Do you have any other visitors to your feeders?

Oh, there are many. Cardinals, 3 types of woodpeckers, chickadees, rose breasted grosbeaks, blue jays and the list goes on. Lots of good ones, and many summertime migrants. The Orioles will be leaving in a few more weeks. I often post bird photos.
I'll bet you have some good ones.

I have to get over to your blog more often! I have seen your shadow contest and have wanted to participate but been having quite a busy summer so far, moving around the country and what not. We almost got something in for the love based shadow, but I think we took a picture almost a week after it closed smh

We get some really colorul birds in Colombia, and @ecoinstante does some really amazing photos, I may be biased though ;p

go outside and video the window from the birds perspective. walk around under the nest to see what the bird sees. look for ANY reflections, AND look for insects. either, or could be causing his reactions.

That's a good idea to do a video from the other side! I tried to do a sneaky video a few times out side, catch it from the other side, but it runs away when I get close. Now that I have the proof though, I shall take one from the other angle!

Its definitely a reflection issue, there are some geckos on the window and she doesn't even care, I thought she would eat them but she first wants to take out her competition!
