The Castle Garden (Burggarten) Vienna

was created after the Hofburg-limited by the ring road at the front and by the Albertina on the back- in 1818 as a private garden of the emperor on an area of 38,000 m².

Story:

As with the Volksgarten, the responsible planners for this park were Ludwig Gabriel von Remy and court gardener Franz Antoine the Elder. The peculiarity was that Kaiser Franz worked as a trained gardener at that time even in the design and made the selection of novel plants from around the world. Over the years, some remodeling measures have been implemented, the style of an English landscaped garden introduced and created a pond.

Only in 1919 did the public gain access to the castle garden with its monuments (among others: marble statue of Mozart and bronze statue of Emperor Franz Joseph) and the palm house. Before that, the people had to settle for a look through the beautiful fence in this park in Vienna. The enclosure of the castle garden - and incidentally also of the Volksgarten - was renovated in detail with the involvement of the Federal Monuments Office and renovated with the same gilding and painting as in 1863. Even today, the monumental-looking iron grid creates an impressively royal look with its rich ornaments.

In 1901, the construction of the secessionist, over 2,000 m² palm house began. Friedrich Ohmann designed this building made of glass and steel and also supervised the 5-year construction period of the last large Habsburg orangery.
The emperor used his private greenhouse to relax and thus took nature to the center of Vienna.
