URBAN MUSHING - Teaching Baxter How to be a Scooter Dog!
Hey Everyone!
It is an exciting week in Baxter's world!
After about two months of planning, we started Baxter's Urban Mushing training.
Urban Mushing - also called Dryland Mushing - is often used by Dog Sledders to keep their dogs in shape during the off-season. It is also used by owners of high energy breeds as a way to effectively exercise their dogs and give them a job to do to help occupy their mind.
Garett became interested in Urban Mushing after realizing his dreams of dog sledding weren't very realistic in the area we lived. He also had been looking for a good way to exercise Baxter without us having to go on a run with him, especially in the hot summer months.
This Sunday we started training Baxter on the kick bike. My boyfriend, Garett, kicks the scooter (formally called a kick bike) while Baxter runs in the front, helping to pull the scooter. This is a great workout for our dog, and gives him a job to do to do, helping to tire out his body and his mind. We videotaped three of our runs today and wanted to share them with you!

Great way to tire out the pup, reminds me of doing this with my old dog back in the day.
It is so much fun! We actually just took him again this morning, but he was feeling a little onery and wouldn't pull the scooter unless there was someone waiting with treats at the other end. It is a process and takes lots of work, but he also was pretty darn sleepy after!
I totally need something like this to tire out Nova but she's just too crazy I need to keep her right next to me so she doesn't do anything silly. Especially if there's any other dogs around. She would also probably just pull off the path or into some bushes hahha.
Also, I would love to see more videos of Baxter !
Haha! Luckily there are breaks on the scooter so you can stop the dog, but I totally get it! I am a little nervous about it, and it is mostly my boyfriend doing the riding. I'm hoping to get more into the riding once he is a little better trained! It really does help with his energy though, which is SO nice!
