Komondorok

in #dogs6 years ago

The Komondor is a Hungarian livestock guardian dog that grows a coat that is thick, long and corded. Also known as Hungarian sheepdogs or mop dogs, this breed is known for loyalty as well as it's thick dreadlocks, which can shield the dogs from wolf bites as they protect their flocks. The breed has been around in Hungary at least 450 years, were they are called Komondorok, but was almost completely wiped out in WW2. Being only located in Hungary before the war, the fiercely protective dogs would viciously defend their farms from occupying troops, until it became standard procedure for the Nazis, and then the Russians, to kill any Komondor on site.

All domestic dog breeds are just wolves that have their standard evolutionary development "short-circuited" at one or more points along their physical growth. While it is natural for a wolf puppy to stay around the den, be frightened of intruders, and bond with its family, eventually the pup grows up through various stages into a very different adult. Domesticated livestock guardian dogs are thought to remain in a perpetual puppy-like state in many aspects of their development, which makes them particularly suited for the work they do. They like to stay at home, and will bond deeply with their family, who they become very protective of. And some breeds, like the Komondor, even keep the more rounded head and shortened nose characteristic of puppies, into adulthood.

Komondorok are originally descended from Tibetan dogs, and came into Hungary with the Cumans in the 12th century, who were fleeing the Mongols. They were bred to live in snowy, mountainous regions and to blend in with a herd of sheep or goats. Though they are quite fast and powerful at times, they tend to mostly just lay around and keep an eye on things. It is common for a Komondor to knock down an intruder and prevent them from escaping, even if the dog was never trained for this. The folks I got my Koms from told me a story about a coon hunter and one of their dogs. The dog found the hunter trespassing and promptly knocked him down, sitting on his chest until the owners came looking for their Komondor the following day! If the man tried to move, the fierce snarl of the dog inches from his face was plenty of inducement to desist.

Haha, how cool! I love both humans and animals with dreadlocks!

another reason why I love dogs- they are fiercely protective, loyal and loving to their humans.

He is a wonderful dog. I love it

Hello rasta–dog, take it easy! :D

What a cool look! Took me straight back to my childhood and the mop heads my mother used to buy as replacements (she liked to do her moping!). They didn't stay white for long.

Interesting read.
