I love these nitty-gritty posts that show how the world works.
So, the lady drove into her transformer? With a car? Those things look expensive - is she required to pay for it somehow?
I remember we had a couple of these humming boxes in our neighborhood, growing up. There was one between our house and the neighbor's, halfway up a hill, overlooking the cul-de-sac. It was a favorite place to sit and read comics and plan our ninja adventures. No one seemed to mind that we were sitting on top of 14,000 volts.
Oh ya, she is goin to have a nice bill headed to her insurance. We don’t charge her for the time it took when we had the bad transformer. That is on us.
Most have no idea what is inside those ugly green boxes.
They are a ticking time bomb on a way. One could just lose it and blow up. That is why there are warning sticker on them to not play on or around. Yet those tend to wear off or get painted over.
There could just be steel mesh barricades put around them to deter close contact with real life.

I couldn’t make out the nomenclature. 4.8, 12kv, whatever it is.. a simple step down, ‘whatever’ it is. “It” is a transformer and there’s NO protection from vehicles or anything else running into it.
That isn’t normal.
They won’t hurt, should 14kv go to ground with you sitting on top of it, you won’t feel a thing. What do you think @jlsplatts, would they feel it?

Are you talking of the car were to become energized?
If so then you would have step potential when you get out of the car.
Car energized slowly leaking electricity out through the tires. The. You hit the ground while touching the car BOOM DEAD. Or is you manage to jump from the vehicle. Your safest bet it so hop both fee simultaneously. Again difference in potential between both feet when walking. The electricity dissipates leaving a difference in potential from one foot to the next. Which could cause electrical shock and possible death.
So if you have to leave the vehicle, like if it is on Fire your best bet is to hop and keep hopping. And once you think you are far enough away, keep hopping.
I'm a second generation old school wireman. I worked side by side with linemen, and although we give each other a hard time, I got nothin' but respect for y'all. We're all brothers.
Great post. I'm way past the work stage of life, but it's good to see real working men in action. Now enjoy some beer and air conditioning.
My brother is an electrician, I thought we gave each other a hard time before we chose are careers. Man it is too funny!! The crap talking that flies around is hilarious.
Yet be both have the upmost respect for each other and heir trades.

That is so cool. I love watching tradesmen work at their jobs. When a backhoe skinned the underground cable at my house the linesmen came and put the insulation back on the cable while it was still hot. That looked like a scary job.
Are there still transformers out there that have PCB in them? A little mineral oil won't do much damage, but that PCB stuff is really bad.

I have a 1 liter jug of it at my house. Works amazing as a lubricant for hand tools and sliding glass doors 😉😉 just a little goes a long ways.
