Big parts of Europe and North America, some other parts of the world are living in a “welfare society”. That means, there are some poor people in these countries, but mostly the 80-90 percent of the population has all the important things or more. Enough food, one or two cars per family, a nice flat or house, vacations…

Has it sense to buy presents (gifts), at Christmas time, or on birthdays, or is it only a waste of resources and time?
- Yes, it has sense, we can never have enough, the economy must grow

i Think they should give gives but not get out loans to pay for them . I was at a Turkish wedding recently and some families get out loans to give wedding gifts. They are announced over a loud speaker how much is given and the families go into debt to keep up with the Jones . I was gobsmacked by this. Give what you can afford . If there were no Christmas or birthdays then poor people in society would have very little to look forward to . Seems a very grey society.
I think on many weddings in developing countries people are trying to help to the couple, it's different than birthday or Christmas presents. Mostly the same couple ot the parents are telling them what they really need. And guests also are paying with gifts for the meals and the party. But yes, loans seem to be exaggerated.
