How Important Will University Education Be in 20 Years?

Despite a handful of university degrees I consider myself mostly self educated. I still enjoy living near and hanging out on campuses, lurking in libraries, hacking my own experiments and binging on obscure journals online.

I did learn things in college, especially while I was in law school. Much of that wasn't classroom learning. The university associations I've been lucky enough to have granted access to resources that were rare and expensive at the time. It may be that is the main role of institutional higher learning.

But education ― access to knowledge and skills, in particular ― is changing rapidly. Information has never been as accessible as it is today. Can one now teach oneself all the skills one needs to know. Or will it be so soon?

In my country, sararies of master level graded workforce are more than double than salaries with a high-school degree. And the gap is increasing.

Robots are coming, robots are among us. They can tke the simple jobs, but not the jobs of creative, intelligent people. I think university degree will be more important, and all sort of high quality knowledge. Also self education.

It feels to me that higher education, while it can be a bit painstaking to afford, plays a significant role in the proliferation of workforce and opportunity creation moving forward. That may be because I myself am a student, yet it feels significant. Qualifications remain important, almost timelessly.

Thanks for answering. I have always found education rewarding on a deeply personal level. But the emphasis between workforce and education troubles me. I think capability is the most important ― the only real ― qualification. Education is one way to pursue capability. But it is not exclusive. And not certain.
