The sunset - step by step

in #drawing6 years ago (edited)

Here is the making-of of the next illustration for the Great Gardens of the God or Worlds !

This time, it's a landscape with a sunset. The drawing part is quite easy, because trees and clouds from far away are not really difficult to do - just some shapes not really demanding. But the coloring part is challenging, because a lots of different hues and shadows : the sky, the clouds, the river, the grass...

But let's begin, first let's set up the elements in a raw drawing :

Now we see where we go, I need to have some details even in the first raw drawing :
Sunset2.jpg

Now, it's time to ink ! No big challenge here, just some patience for the details of grass and foliages. I just need to have in mind the final result with colors I want, to know how much I need to put shadow with ink or not. Sometimes, it works very well with the color ; sometimes, it doesn't work at all and gives a result too "heavy". And frankly : I still don't really know why, so I still hesitate and make some mistakes !

And finally, after erasing the pencil :

So, now, here is the most challenging - but most fun - part ! The color !
I always begin to put some water with very light color on the drawing to prepare for watercolors :

I began by the first plan, but after some thoughts, I think now I schould have began by the sky, I think the tree on the left would have been better at the end.

For now, colors are pretty bright, like in broad daylight - so I need to darken a little bit with some light layer of purple, blue and black mixed. The sky will be difficult - I keep the sun with the white of the paper to get the greatest brightness of the whole picture.

And finally, with the shadowing of the clouds we got our sunset for the next chapter of the story !

Great landscape, the light of the sundown it's perfect, it makes a nice contrast of colours. Let me give you a tip, when you post, always put on the top the finished painting and then the proccess, that way appears as the cover page.

It's a good tip, I see the reason of it, indeed ! Thanks ^^

I appreciate you honesty about hesitation, I often struggle with the very same feelings. This is a beautiful water color landscape and I appreciate you sharing with us here on Steem!

It's me who appreciate the compliments ! ^^

Love this, @djacbaweur :D So lovely ! The reflections of the mountains on the water is wonderful and the part of the lake that does not reflect is still and mirrorlike, so serene <3

The rolling hills are well detailed also, and I love the grass texture and the leaves you've done at the foreground, framing the picture so nicely <3

And of course, the sun set and the sky are gorgeously done * ___ *

Love the step by step also <3

Thanks @veryspider ! I wasn't sure that the grass texture will be ok, but at the end I'm happy of it !

This one is really lovely art, Djac :D. I like watching the step by step pictures of how you created the picture, and I think you draw the tree really well, even in ink form. The finished version of course looks much nicer, because you gave it such lovely watercolours paints on the picture.

I like the calm river, and the yellowish green on the grass, they make a lovely and peaceful picture.

The tree is ok for the drawing, but I think it loses some accuracy when I paint the sky - because I had to put color on the tree above the previous ones. The other way, begin to paint the sky and then paint the tree, I think it would have been better. But anyway, I'm happy that you like it ! :)

Amazing, nice lines!

Thank you ! :)
