In an ashram in Varanasi - an oil painting

monk-web.jpg
I still remember the day when I saw this man in an ashram in India. We were wandering around Benares, and saw a monumental gate - on the other side was a lovely garden. Our curiosity got the best of us and we walked in.

We found men dressed like this one who spent their days in mediation and contemplation. Their only possessions were the clothing they wore, their bowls for meals, and a pair of wooden sandals. They had little cells, each equipped with a '"charpoy" (wood bed with woven net for a mattress).

They asked us many questions about how we lived, and were amazed at the price we paid for our airplane tickets. To them it was more money than they had ever seen in their lives.

We went back in the afternoon and took a few photos, and chatted with them some more. They were all gathered around a man who was reading to them. It was a picture of perfect peace.

It is amazing how different cultures have a different approach about what is valuable and what is not. Most of the time, we westerns are so imbued with ourselves that when we realize that there exist realities totally different from ours we get a big surprise. It is still a huge world to see @kathleenscarboro and now we have this wonderful window to get to know a little about it. As always I loved your artwork.

What do you think about them not having earned enough to buy a flight ticket in their lifetime?

Best regards.

Very lovely painting, Kathleen. I love how graceful and serene the painting is, the transpose of multi colours make such beautiful combination and harmony, creating a dreamy atmosphere.

Beautiful!!!

What is interesting is they sound like early Westerners before the industrial age a bed with tied rope (sleep tight was the term) a few handmade items from which to eat and the clothes on their back. The house and land often not theirs. It's funny that in a way we are all at varying times living the same life but in different times.

Wonderful inspiration for paintings as usual and so much colour and joy in the piece.

Thank you @donnadavisart. Simplicity has its own charm, doesn't it.

Beautiful painting and a wonderful experience, I imagine. I would love to also visit an Ashram someday.

Thank you. It was a lovely experience, which I intend to renew. Perhaps there are ashrams in Austria? We have one in Paris.
