Buddy Up Word of the Week. "Commemorate"

in #dropintheocean5 years ago

Attended the Buddy Up show last week in which Steemians discussed "The Word of The Week".

Basically, a Word of the week is chosen by the people during this show/discussion and then we all go ahead and write a post about that word.

The word chosen for this week is "Commemorate".

Now, this word is a really interesting one as it has its meaning in todays world which is:

commemorate
/kəˈmɛməreɪt/

verb
verb: commemorate; 3rd person present: commemorates; past tense: commemorated; past participle: commemorated; gerund or present participle: commemorating

recall and show respect for (someone or something).
"a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the war dead"

mark or celebrate (an event or person) by doing or producing something.
"the victory was commemorated in songs"

synonyms: celebrate, pay tribute to, pay homage to, honour, salute, toast; remember, recognize, acknowledge, observe, mark, memorialize, immortalize, keep alive the memory of
"the event commemorated the courage of the villagers"

As per "Google"!

But what I see in this word is more so the roots of the word and what it is made up of.

Com = Common, which could be expanded into the more appropriate uses of this word with those words that use it as the root, such as community, communal.

Basically, it is something that we all share and feel to be a part of our community and what all helped make us into who and what we are.

memo = memory (of)

I believe that this is self explanatory, in that we remember that special something or somebody.

rate = the part that makes it an action, the act of remembering things as a community as a group of humans who wish to pay our respects together and share the emotions during the experience.

Unfortunately, sometimes it may feel as if the act itself is more so a "traditional get together" and not an act in which there is respect and a reminder of things/actions/people who have helped to make us into who and what we are.

But, that is the way life seems to go, humans do have a tendency to forget about the past and as such make the same mistakes over and over again and hence doom the future generations with the same cycle of events.

We all do it. None of us are immune to it.

Allegedly a great philosopher from the ancient Persian times, prior to the tribes moving west, north, east and south said:

"The children of today are just impossible, nothing like what we were back when I was a child"

and allegedly an ancient Greek and Roman and English and German and French philosopher said the same thing in later years.

I rest my case on that one.

All in all, I really enjoyed the show, for those of you who are interested, contact @penderis or @thehive on Discord and find out where and how to get on board.

It is a really cool show and very interesting approach to a discussion about many things that revolve around the blogging scene here on our Steem blockchain.

Wishing everyone a great weekend,

Yours truly,
