I dont understand anything so a basic explanation is appreciated.

It's profitable to just upgrade the drug production buildings (skip down to the largest one) and you recoup your steem in a few days. I did the highest 2 and expected payout is 3 steem for tomorrow. IMO the best use of steem is to pay to upgrade buildings focusing on drug production. Then use those drugs to increase your heist payout.
Being that you get paid for production of drugs and for the heist which takes drugs that is what you want to focus on.
I also upgraded so I can produce some defensive troops, but based on how often you are online that may or may not matter to you.

Dear @knircky, this game is simply based on what you can efford to invest to produce more drugs and getting reward on it.
As you can see the top is berniesanders connected account, you know how much power he can invest especially on drugs ;)
You have 3 resources in the game.
Drugs
Weapons
Alcohol
For earning Steem only Drugs are relevant. There are 2 ways to earn drugs. By producing them and by stealing them from other players.
There are also 2 ways to earn Steem via drugs.
The daily payout based on your total drug production
The heist based how much % of drugs you put into the heist.
To upgrade your buildings you need all 3 resources and after every upgrade you need more.
To defend yourself from getting your drugs stolen you need to hire defenese in form of units. Those require of course resources as well.
The daily payout is afaik based what people are buying directly with Steem as it is free to play but you can also boost your progress by buying upgrades for your buildings and pass the requirments and the time it would take to build.
So you create an endless cycle of resources you need to upgrade the next building to upgrade the others etc.
The Steem rewards atm seem to be almost to good to be true tbh and I am curious to see if it will stay like this.
(1) You have 3 resources in the game : Drugs / Weapons / Alcohol !!!
(2) daily payout : based on your total drug production.
As shown in the figure, my daily DRUGS output is 1.73, and the daily income is 0.024 STEEM (daily the income will be automatically transferred to your STEEM account)
(3) How to get your drugs ?
producing them in your building or by stealing them from other players.
(4) daily reward pool : If you transfer your drugs to the daily reward pool , that you to get the STEEM of the reward pool according to the ratio.

It seems to me like you play the game, upvote, transact, resteem, post for them etc. They take 20% for 'development costs', payout 80% in order of how successful you are and there are in-game purchases which also add to the pot. I'll stick to poker

The main objective it to produce more drugs. The bigger your drug production rate, the higher you are on the rank (therefore, will recieve a bigger portion of the funds of the daily round)
To reach that objetives, you use your resources (drugs, weapons and alcohol) to build and improve your buildings, increasing the production rate, and the max amount you can store of each resource.
Alcohol and weapons are also used to recruit troops, which you can use to attack other players, and steal some drugs.

I haven't joined the Drug War scene yet, but from what I understand is, you upgrade your buildings and become a larger dealer. I'm still trying to learn Steem Monsters so I didn't want to try a new game until I understand SM.
