What is PTSD?

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a traumatic injury to the brain, caused by an event or series of events. The person suffering can have many symptoms. The most common and apparent are:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Difficulty being with other people
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Unfounded Fear
  • Detachment

PTSD has a common meme:

PTSD is not about what’s wrong with you, It is about what happened to you.

Family members and onlookers often say, “Just get over it!” This makes it worse as the person suffering feels abandoned. In order to avoid the memories, they are detaching anyway and so relationships falter.

If you look at mainstream sources, it will be said that drugs and counseling are the best ways to heal.

If you look in groups for survivors, you will find many people who tried counseling that made things worse and who are now addicted to drugs they wish they did not take. They have lost their families and maybe everything else and reach out to help each other.

The steps to heal include:

  • facing the issue that caused the trauma
  • finding strategies to cope when triggered
  • finding strategies to heal

Within those steps there are many options. Some work for some people and some work for others. It takes strength and determination to work through these steps and the resources to do so.

Estimates of the percentage of people suffering from some level of PTSD in the US range up to as high as 10%. This means one out of every ten people you see is suffering from this disorder.

As the parent of someone who suffers from PTSD, I can relate to all of what I read, hear and see on the topic. It is very wide-ranging in so many ways and hard to get a handle on it. The only thing I know to do is keep trying.
