Censorship Resistant Alternatives to YouTube

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

With all the censorship of content by Big Tech these days I've been looking for a good censorship resistant alternative to Youtube.

So far there appear to be four options:

  1. DTube - the original Steem blockchain based video sharing platform which has just been upgraded to Ver 0.8 to include live streaming and messaging. It takes 25% of author rewards. It uses IPFS.

  2. DLive - a newer alternative Steem blockchain based video sharing platform and live streaming platform which doesn't take a percentage of author rewards. It was first to offer live streaming on the Steem blockchain and has a funky user interface.

  3. BitChute - an WebTorrent based streaming platform using blockchain technology. Its been around since Jan 2017 with a major upgrade in March 2018. Its popular with the Alt Right and Infowars official channel has 20k subscribers.

  4. Bit.Tube - A new IPFS based streaming platform with its own cryptocurrency and rewards system like Steem. It also allows you to put all your YouTube content on Bit.Tube in one click, which is a great feature. Seth Estrada has his popular crypto channel here.

Its great to see all this competition in this space.
Its sorely needed if we are to maintain our freedom on the internet.

I'm still assessing each of them to work out which ones to post on. They all seem to work OK to download.

I'll provide an update post once I've formed a stronger opinion.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Just did a traffic analysis of the daily unique visitors of the 4 sites:

  1. BitChute: 125k
  2. D.Tube 62k
  3. DLive 22k
  4. Bit.Tube 16k

My question is, how long before one of these becomes so big that the "monsters of oppression" or PTBs, however you wanna call 'em, will develop interest in and start forcing the people that are in control (after all there is control of access to these platforms) to start shutting down undesirables or at least divulge information about them. After all, these platforms already have their own policies, so it wont be long before these policies will evolve, just like youtube did. Anything that's small, PTB's don't care about, it's when it gets big and popular, that's when the problems, like we're seeing on today's internet arises. I remember, when now too many people gave a shiet about internet at all, there was no mass media, no big companies, nothing, just academic information basically, oh and porn, of course :) If we want real freedom of speech, we need a platform that's uncontrollable, period, let anyone have their say, no matter how lunatic it is and let the viewers choose what to believe. The battle of persuasion should not be skewed, it should be a fair game for everyone. It is the only true way to have freedom of speech. As long as there is someone at the helm, it will always be system of control, system of bias. Anarchy is the only way!

©Of course, that's just my opinion and I could be wrong :)

But, at least so far, I am allowed to express it here.

I agree and that is why I have focussed on decentralised platforms. While it is true that the founders have some control of them now while they are small, the whole point of blockchain based decentralised platforms is that no-one will control them, no one can buy them once they are mature.
The Steem blockchain is controlled by its witnesses which are elected by the community. Yes, Ned has some control but not complete like in a normal company. And this control will lessen as the platforms become more mature.

Mike Adams (@healthranger) has real.video as well. https://www.real.video/

Thanks. It doesn't seem to be a decentralised censorship resistant platform like the 4 I listed above.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
While the owner certainly seems to support free speech, Google once did too.
I prefer decentralised platforms that are inherently censorship resistant because no one controls them (or at least no one will once they get big).

Apologies, I didn't know you wanted only decentralised blockchain based ones listed.

I think at this stage Mike has it set up as a centralised platform. I thought I would throw it out there because I know he is trying to get it up and off the ground.

While I'm a staunch supporter of free speech, and applaud all efforts to support freedom... one must be careful that anonymous 'free speech' alternatives may be worse than what people are trying to move away from...

It may come to be revealed that some of the alternatives are actually COINTELPRO type collection sites...

Just sayin'

I'm not suggesting that these sites are anonymous at all.
I'm just saying they are censorship resistant because they are decentralised and distributed.

One must always be aware that anything you post publicly may be able to be traced back to you unless you are super careful and you should always assume people are watching what you say - isn't that the point of posting in the first place?!!!
