D.Tube Giving Back To The STEEM Blockchain: This Is A Sensational Move
D.Tube is one of the applications that I feel is going to really draw people to this blockchain.
A large part of the success of STEEM is going to depend upon the applications that are placed upon it. There are a lot of wonderful developments coming out. The challenge, as with any business, is remaining viable. There is an expense to running a business and D.Tube is no exception.
For this reason, a portion of the rewards a post earned on there went to D.Tube. This is quite common. The one thing that got people's ire up a bit is that it was 25% that D.Tube took off the top.
They are in the process of releasing update 0.8 yet are working out a few bugs in it. Nevertheless, they did release some information that is very exciting.
To start, D.Tube contests the 25% claiming it is actually 11%. I do not know what it is but wanted to put it in there for fairness.
Now to the good stuff.
D.Tube created a sponsorship program which is based upon the delegation one gives to it. Basically, their bot will upvote posts based upon your delegation which you will be paid the same as if you manually curated. One will also get his or her share of the beneficiary awards.
They also decided to cut the percentage they take. Instead of simply moving it to zero, they decided to return it in the form of curation rewards. What happens is the beneficiary reward for a particular post is taken and given back to those who voted for the post based upon the strength of their vote.
This is a great way to reward those who take the time to manually upvote posts on D.Tube.
It is nice to see they determined they are financially viable without keeping the beneficiary reward. They have about 80K SP to use for the purpose of covering their expense. With that type of nest egg along with the curation they receive by voting with over 2M SP, they should be able to cover all the expenses.

This is wonderful since, I feel, this blockchain needs this application. D.Tube really puts this blockchain in the big league arena of social media. When there is a place for people to post videos, a competitor for YouTube, that is huge.
I am glad that D.Tube is going to be around for a long time while also giving back to the community.

This doesn’t solve the main issue of dtube tho: the longevity of videos. IIRC dtube took 25% in order to pay guaranteed IPFS hosting but and that would keep all videos for 54 (?) weeks. The question is still what happens to those videos after that period. Will the dtube archives become ghost town?
While that fits with the seven days rewards mechanic of Steem, that may be very detrimental for those who produce cornerstone content such as video tutorial series.
Nevertheless this is a good thing to see happening. Projects should, whenever possible, make sure to reward their users and thus increase retention.
Paid alternatives, unless they are flawless and stand head and shoulders above free alternatives, usually get crushed on the internet. Permanent video archival is free on other websites so I don't really see why people would pay to keep their videos online, they're more likely to just upload them to other websites once they're taken down off of dtube.
I’m talking about the obligation of the website operator though, not the point of view of the uploader.
The website operator has to store the videos somewhere. When they use IPFS tech, they risk falling in the trap of dead torrents. If nobody hosts the file anymore... it’s not available and possibly gone. That’s a weakness about IPFS, yet many users aren’t aware of that.
There are paid IPFS storage solutions available for those who don’t want to pay for say AWS storage. That is a cost the website operator endorses, AFAIK dtube planned paying for that with the beneficiary cut, which is also why it is that high compared to other dapps on steem.
Some day that will become an issue unless another solution has been found already.
The uploader will most often indeed go there where it is free (or most revenue can be made).
The idea that dTube was taking 25% of the total earnings of a post did turn off a lot of content creators but I understand why it was needed because it is not cheap to run servers that will host videos and it needs to be high speed.
I myself have used it just once since I am not a vlogger..
A lot of other vloggers though swear by dlive and I had recently uploaded a video through there as well and found it fast and they have a good curation team.
Yet I am happy that you took the time and effort to educate people and 11% is not bad and if they are giving back further with curation rewards then that is great news indeed.
The delegation though seems awfully similiar to what dmania did though so I am not sure how to react on that piece.
I remember using Dtube when it first came out and was kind of buggy so I stopped using it for awhile. I've noticed a big increase in people posting to it now so maybe I need to get back on that bandwagon.
I don't particularly like youtube for obvious reasons (censorship) but I will admit I've used it as an alternative when Dtube failed me at times. it's good to see that it's improving and turning into a viable and more heavily used application.
