The Power of the DVD/ Blue Ray

So there is something that has been bothering me is this recent wave of putting down DVD’s.

I listen to a lot of filmmaking podcasts and sure enough, from time to time people mention Dvd’s and usually have to make a big deal out of it.

You are free to have your opinions and express them, but when you have a platform dedicated to film making I don’t think it’s nice to ridicularize a means of income to filmmakers.

“There’s this thing made of plastic and it’s round… and you put them into a player” or “I rarely buy blue rays, if I do it’s only a special edition, but I almost never buy them” or ”Dvd’s are still going, but when this generation dies it will be gone” “it’s really weird to buy DVD's like some man cave” … and so on… it’s a constant thing that I have to listen.

Fist of all I don’t think the Blue ray will die… at some point, it will hit rock bottom but it will re emerge, as a colector’s item.

That’s another one… How come no-one talks about the collector’s aspect of it?

Personally, I love dvd’s and I love my collection. It’s the material thing that I’m more connected to, by far. It even crosses the material realm into something else.

And the funny thing is the big director’s out there also love them… The Nolans and the Sean Bakers and so.. all talk about their blue ray collections and how it’s the second best way to seeing films. (After the theatre of course) But no… this new guys that nobody knows about have to make a point by saying how “strange” it is.

We get it… everyone know there are streaming services out there. Yea ll know that kids being born now, will always have access to streaming. We get that people are trying to “be young” …. But this constantly bashing of my (and everyones else who I admire) favourite piece of physical matter, is just nuts.

It’s like musicians would come out and make a point of saying how vinyl is “so strange” and what not… nuts.

Plus, we don’t say that about Tarantino’s film master collection… we say that it’s cool… so … does this make sense.

The worst part is that people make a point of going out of their way to say something bad about the dvd’s… that’s what’s really bad about it… they have such a need to show that they are hip or whatever that they insist on saying something bad about it… nuts.

The thing that’s really nuts is that this conversations usually happen in filmmaking platforms, like I said. And blue rays are by far the best source of knowledge out there… nothing can compare to the audio commentaries of the Directo’s and os on… the deleted scenes the feature length documentaries and so on… so on top of it, you’re bad mouthing the best “Film school” there is.

I don’t even know what to say… I guess: Please we all know about the streaming thing… you do not have to go out of your way to say how “old fashion and soon to be dead” the great Dvd’s are. Just talk to any filmmaker who’s name we all know and love.

As always, thank you for reading.

Agree. People can act like fearful sheep, hearing one person talk up digital over hard copy art and then repeating the line.
There are groups that want control of your movie catalog. They want you streaming everything on their site. They want to be able to delete a movie from history.
No thanks. My DVD shelf is very important to me and will be through 2020 and beyond.
Same as books! Some people out there want to edit or delete 1984, etc, so you have to keep a hard copy.

Yeah, very true. I did not mention that aspect of it, but I do agree.

Thanks for your comment and enjoy your collection :)

Thanks. Good power and energy to you!

For your too!!
