Not-So-Great Facts About the American 'Modern' Age

in #economics5 years ago (edited)

I came across a list of 35 facts that are alleged to be "mind blowing" about the current American era, that previous generations would have not believed were true. I find some of these facts shocking indeed, but some are just interesting, not too significant, or boring. I'll share the most pertinent ones.

  • Approximately one-fourth of the entire global prison population is in the United States.

  • In more than half of all U.S. states, the highest paid public employee in the state is a football coach.

  • The average supermarket in the United States wastes about 3,000 pounds of food each year.

  • More than 2 million Americans work for Wal-Mart.

  • Half of all American workers make less than $30,533 a year.

  • Almost one-third of all Millennials are still living with their parents.

  • The suicide rate in the United States has risen by 33 percent since 1999.

  • Women have earned at least 57 percent of all bachelor’s degrees in the United States for 18 years in a row.

  • More than 27 million acres of U.S. farmland is owned by foreigners.

  • Congestion on our highways costs Americans approximately 101 billion dollars a year in wasted fuel and time.

  • In 1980, the U.S. national debt had just surpassed the one trillion dollar mark. In 2019, we are about to surpass the 22 trillion dollar mark with no end in sight.

The most boring facts were:

  • The Pentagon has more square footage of office space than any other office building in the entire world.

  • The state of Alaska is 429 times larger than the state of Rhode Island. But Rhode Island has a significantly larger population than Alaska does.

  • Alaska has a longer coastline than all of the other 49 U.S. states put together.

  • The city of Juneau, Alaska is about 3,000 square miles in size. It is actually larger than the entire state of Delaware.

  • The original name of the city of Atlanta was “Terminus“.

Maybe Pentagon square footing is "mind blowing" for past generations because the Pentagon was smaller? Or ... what? Why is the old name of Atlanta "mind blowing"?

The prison population stat I knew about, which is shocking to realize. And a footbal coach as the highest paid public employee in 50% of states is just sad for the state of public use of money and justification for taxes that take money from people.

What blows your mind or shocks you the most about the list? Or maybe about the modern era we live in?

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

Guessing the football coach one has to do with the lucrative TV contracts and ticket/concession sales, and other marketing ploys that rake in large amounts of cash. Let the games and suds wash away remembrance of being shackled to unfulfilling work while what little freedoms exist continue to be eroded.

The congestion one is an issue I raise when the issue of immigration comes up. I remember what it was like before so many highways became parking lots, before you sat 3 turns at a light before making it through. The politicians and businesses argue we need more people, but I haven't met the person who wishes for longer driving times, paying for more gas nor any of the many other hassles that comes with increasing the population.

They only want more people here so there is more workers. More workers means they have to compete less for employees thus equaling lower pay. Its a sad reality.

13 wars over the last 30 years and the 14 trillion dollars spent and the hundreds of thousands of lives that have perished from this earth, It all happened even though there was more than one president in these years...
But there is one system

Several of those are concerning. Suicide on the rise.Foreigners buying up our farmland, such a large prison population. Oh my. I should have been a football coach. Thanks @krnel

Unfortunately Massachusetts is amongst that stat for the highest paid employee being a sports coach. It’s sad really that there’s such an obsession with sports over anything else. Not surprising though as it’s an MSM goal to make people angry and uninformed.
These mind blowing lists are just click bait lol there’s next to nothing mind blowing except the prison population and sports obsession. Those blow my mind that people don’t care more about it.

None of those facts are boring to me considering that I know someone who lives in Alaska.

I'm mind blown by the fact that most Americans still believe theirs is the best country in the world...

Football coaches contribute to the "bread and circuses" to keep the masses entertained by trivia and distracted from the crimes of the state.

The waste in America is subsidized by the sweat and sacrifice of the third world countries who give up their cheap labour and commodities to cater to American greed.

Land owned by foreigners is happening all over the world, even London and Greece.

The "prison Industrial complex" is well known. Because it is privatised, it pays them to have more prisoners. They make more money off more convictions, so victimless crimes like marijuana possession are targeted unnecessarily, exploiting humans for profit.
