The Miracle of Biology. The origins of life...

in #ecotrain6 years ago (edited)

The world is Biology. Everything in and around us is Biology, which is the study of life itself. The age old questions of where we came from, and who we are or where we really are are yet to be answered in full by Biology. Once you have an appreciation for the truly staggering miraculousness of life, and can take a step back, we can truly start to understand and appreciate life itself. In a way, Biology is pure Anarchy, and through the chaos of evolution we have come to where we are today. The only constant in life is our Biology, and despite the very many changes we have seen in the world over the last few millennium, our Biology has been the heart and engine of everything we have created and become.

It's only when we really study something that we can start to have a deep appreciation of it. Since I have studied Biology many years ago for around 7 years, I have learned so many things that have humbled me, because rather than magic, we really do have to call life itself a miracle. Even today with all our 'amazing' technology, Biology is superior in every way to any technology we have created. That is because biology is the ultimate technology. I would like to share some very simple and wonderful stats to illustrate this point!

  • Human eye is a 576 megapixels! Did you even think about what our eye resolution is? We can see in way more detail than even the very best camera or screen can show us! Our human eye can distinguish 10 million colours!

  • The complexity of the bacterial world in our bodies and skin is a world unto itself. In fact, there are more bacteria in a human mouth than there are people in the world! Now that's food for thought!

  • Our Biology is made up of so many things, but what unifies it all is our DNA! This magical code of life, written by something intelligent and is the greatest computer program of all! Modern science has barely begun the journey of understanding our DNA, and that is hardly surprising considering that if a one persons's DNA were uncoiled, it would stretch 10 billion miles, from Earth to Pluto and back! Is it any surprise that modern day Biology calls the majority of DNA 'junk' because they still don't know what most of it does!

  • Our minds are located in our wondrous Brains. Our brains remain a great mystery of Biology, how it so perfectly manages to give life and animation to our perfect bodies. Our brain is like a computer, that acts on the instructions of our DNA, and the processing power of the human mind is really quite extraordinary. By extraordinary I mean that the brain contains 86 billion nerve cells joined by 100 trillion connections. This is more than the number of stars in the Milky Way, in just one mind, one brain, one person. Our brains consume as much power as a light-bulb, and most of us have no idea what it is doing most of the time. And yet, the human brain produces as much data in 30 seconds as the NASA Hubble Space telescope has produced in its entire lifetime. Or how about the fact that your brain could fit in approximately 1 million songs, as the storage capacity of a human brain exceeds 4 terabytes! Now find me an iPod that can hold that kind of data! That is why I call Biology a miracle.. because it is almost perfection from the very smallest detail to the very biggest.

Nothing is here in this world by accident, since Biology has evolved over billions of years. Every tiny fold and flap in our skin is there for a reason, because evolution is the process by which we draw ever closer to perfection over many generations and lifetimes. It is not very easy to appreciate the simple miracle of life itself, because it is all we know. Many people question the existence of God, and are looking for proof, when the proof is all around them. What happens in one tiny cell is so beyond comprehension that we must be humbled.

I studied Biology at Brunel University in West London in 1992-1996. The very first essay we were asked to write was titled 'evolution'. I had a great time writing this dissertation, and did a lot of research and understanding of Darwin's theory of evolution, as well as looking at whether it can be responsible for the origins of life as well. My research was quite clear in just about any aspect I looked at.. The more we learn about DNA and Biology, the more we realise that SOMETHING created all of this.. This life, our DNA, our cells.. the machinery of life is a stunning creation with incredible intelligence and pre planned design. I concluded this essay by saying that there must be a higher power, or God that created us and life itself, because life could never have happened just by chance alone. I got an A+ and the highest grade in the year with that as my conclusion... after many pages of scientific reasoning of course!

I would like to leave you with a very special movie from the Great David Attenborough. If you have ever wondered how life got started here on Earth, this is a great watch for everyone and requires no previous knowledge to understand.

Discover how life got started here on earth in 6 minutes by watching Sir David Attenborough Narrate Charles Darwin And The Tree Of Life. A beautiful watch!

Good contribution! If you combine biology with other sciences like chemistry and physics, a lot of daily processes and bodily processes and changes could be explained. All the sciences are interlinked. And one could say that there is only one science the science of life, including species in it.

this is true. . it is really science i am talking about.. with a strong emphasis on biology.. but thats for bringing that up!

Definitely true. And I am really sure that there are a lot other biologists in our community who could be involved in contributing to the subjects. And at the end, everyone could benefit or get something could out of this.

We were talking about Attenbourough yesterday. What a living legend. We will mourn when he passes. Amazing you referenced God in a biology essay! Definitely a fascinating topic.

i know.. i thought id get laughed at.. but my tutor was well impressed because it was all really true! it turned out to be the first and last a+ i got in the next four years ;-)

Ah no wonder you remember it then!!!

I like to think that life was created by mind and evolution is in act what happened while mind was actually creating life.
65 million years or billions of years, in this dimension can indeed be just a few seconds in the higher dimensions where mind is operative.
Thank you for this post. This is a very informative and comprehensive post.

Great article! Thank you.

I will say the chicken came first because God created everything and then the command was go and multiply.
A great post though.

If nothing else, I’ve never seen an egg lay a chicken.
