Doing work around the house - Ditch Digging

in #ecotrain5 years ago

We are putting two berms and a trench in grandma's garden, finally the autumn has come and the final hurricane has passed, and we can work outside. The relative humidity has dropped to 40 percent, and we spent the morning and early afternoon rearranging things outside.

I started plotting out a place to dig out in my mind over the last months. There are many reasons why we think this work will be beneficial. Firstly, the layout is just right, and its in an area that has grown so shady that most of the bushes have died. Those that were alive we transplanted.

On both sides of the trench we started piling up a berm. Here you can see one of the elephant ear plants that I planted but have not yet shown.

We worked hard for several hours to do the main task of digging out the center trench, and piling the two berms on either side higher and higher with dirt. The way the two berms face they will block the view of the trench from either direction, even more so when plants move in on top.

Today we will fill the trench with the organic material we have collected through 'weeding'. Normally, in this neighborhood, all organic waste is sent off site, picked up in a big truck on fridays. We think this is a poor choice, and now choose to keep our organic material onsite, if hidden by design.

After planting a few saigo palms, off shoots of a larger onsite palm, on the street side berm we take a rest. Later, we can expand the hole by mixing in sand with the organic material.

I hope you too are making ecological choices for the places in which you live! A better world starts with small design decisions by each of us.

How about calling upon me to assist you complete the work?

When do you have to go back to run the coffee farm in Columbia?

So, the purpose of the berms is essentially to hide soil saving composting? NINJA COMPOST? :D
