Alternative consumer challenge - preloved goods 🚗🚙🚐

in #ecotrain5 years ago (edited)

I am taking part in the collaborative Wisdom challenge to consider alternative consumer habits that don’t cost our health or the earth set by @ecotrain and @naturalmedicine.

In the middle of a field at Burwash Manor in Cambridgeshire with cow pats everywhere, once a month there is a “lazy car boot sale”. We occasionally sell our unwanted belongings and we love buying preloved goods, particularly for our children who get bored of their toys easily or outgrow them quickly. This means that we are reusing and recycling items and helping to keep stuff out of landfill.

In addition to preloved goods, you can also buy fresh fruit and vegetables, cakes and other baked goodies, surplus allotment produce which is often organically grown as well as all sorts of unusual and exotic plants.

When the weather is nice, it makes for an interesting browse for the whole family as you can find some really eclectic things and when we have sold items, we feel less guilty about being consumerists. At the end of the car boot season and during the spring, we donate unwanted stuff to the school’s jumble sale which raises much needed funds for the school.

Anything that is not worthy of resale is recycled or textiled so our black bin for rubbish is usually quite empty.

Thanks to @naturalmedicine and @ecotrain for this brilliantly conceived initiative, @fleur 🙏🏽

We always LOVE to see pre-loved goods being re-purposed, re-loved by someone else and helping keep the landfills of the world empty. Most important! That you can be 'consumerist' and have some fun too is def one for the win. Thanks for contributing to the challenge!

@ecoTrain

Thank you for the opportunity, it’s a great initiative 🙏🏽

nice! my old favourite way to get rid of ALL those things! Its amazing how there is always SOMEONE who wants to buy even the most random things if the price is right!

Absolutely! Thanks for your reply 🙏🏽

Going to a yard or garage sale is almost as exciting as browsing a thrift store. At such an event, it seems like you combine the best of two worlds: you buy, sell, or trade the stuff you've been using for things others have been using. In the end you may even end up with something that you've had yourself before.

We love browsing thrift stores too, we call them charity shops in England. Things definitely change hands lots of times until they are too worn or broken to use 🙏🏽

Pre-loved is awesome. I even love the term. There's so much satisfaction to be had from buying second hand goods, especially in a throw away society! I need to sell some of my stuff I know I don't need anymore and pass it on to someone else. Eek, plus I need the money!
