Do I Want to Be a Superhero - Response to Ecotrain QOTW...

in #ecotrain5 years ago (edited)

All this talk of implants and chips that can give you super human powers, with the tremendous advances in AI , this seems to be the way of the future.
I'm very interested in that, listening to Elon Musk speaking of the future and the developments they have been making

Plus interviews with
Yuval Harari about his book Homo Deus: a Brief History of Tommorrow which I am presently reading

But where I am at, right now, I do not have an interest in having any implants or artificial enhancements. My focus is to develop my understanding, following the path of awakening. You see I live in the forest with no cell phone - no smart phone connected to me most of my waking hours. And I much prefer the natural world as to cyberspace.

What does concern methough, is the future my granddaughter will live in. It will be her world where there will be those options of enhanced humans, with all the super human abilities that AI can endow.

Yuval Harari, in his book Homo Deus brings up the point - if people were taking advantage of this AI and technology and giving their children these enhancements, almost superhuman qualities, would you deny that for your child, leaving them at a disadvantage? Is that leaving it so they will be left behind?

Now that is a bit of a dillema! If the focus is put on those qualities that AI and technology can provide, is it at the lose of other values which I deem quite important - things like a good sense of humanity, being kind and compassionate? Can it bring more inner peace? Is it giving more control to those who have bought this about? Are you at their mercy? If these enhancements fail or if it is beyond your means to keep upgrading - what is the actual cost?

Somehow what is being offered seems somewhat more superficial. Could it bring us closer to a utopia or just bring us more inequality?

These wonderful technologies have made many advancements but what about the state of humanity? Is it moving to a higher level of morality or is the level of morality dropping? Is humanity really ready for this? How will it be used? What really are the benefits and what are the liabilities? It is a continual process to educate yourself on these matters and it will be interesting to see what the future brings!

It will be interesting too, to see some of the other responses to @ecotrain question of the week " Do you want to be a superhero?" Find details at

Oh jeez... I didn't realize we were already here with all that enhancement stuff!!! All those questions really change the story, I kind of fear inequality will only grow with such powers.

At least for a while until rebels get a hold of it too

Superhuman abilities huh...the future is really getting more and more unexpected...

No one knows what will happen if humanity really gets this technology. I think they'll adapt when they get it, but it's going to be the survival of the fittest in the end. Doesn't mean the most powerful implanted technology will win, though. There are just too many factors for it.

Maybe an implanted chip to communicate with nature, the trees and animals...

The changes are happening with such rapidity! It is quite fascinating on one hand and kinda terrifying on the other!
I don't want any chips messing with my head when I'm communing with nature!

as world became so high-tech, sometimes humanity are being forgotten. It's because all of us are focus in new technology. I don't know if we already know that we are not robot or machine, we are human who has the freedom to choose what kind of life we wanted to be.

LOVED the question about a higher level of morality, cos ultimately it's our heart-conscience-morality which makes us truly human. no?

Exciting yet a bit scary just to think about it. Implants that could enhance our normal capabilities and possibly learn a language within minutes just by uploading to the chip. Science fiction that could be close to reality in the future.

There you go, the most important change might be a change to the character. But here's a thought: If implanted people got more caring, compassionate, and kind, wouldn't that make everyone else ... well, selfish, greedy, and arrogant (even if they hadn't been that before)? Also, what would be the consequences? I mean, would the people without implants be even capable of living in a society the implanted people are creating?
Interesting ideas in any case. Also that book Homo Deus sounds like something I would enjoy reading.

Yes that is the concern of Widening the gap between the haves and the have nots even to the point of those with out not being able to live in a world dominated by those that have! Perhaps they would have to seperate and create a society of their own which may be more humanistic!
Homo Deus is a fabulous book. We actually have the audio version along with Yuval's other two books Sapiens and Lessons for the 21st Century. We haven't read/listened to those two books yet but we have listened to a lot of interviews with Yuval on those books and I like his thinking and ideas.

Right now I'm just envisioning a world, where the let's say average, normal humans, (meaning not the exceptional egomaniacs) are confronted with a super-compassionate, highly sensitive kind, who can immediately know and understand the other one's feelings just by looking at them. On the other hand, to those sensitive types us regular folks (who do care about each other, but not in this extra heightened way) must seem like narcissistic savages.

Reminds me of a girlfriend I had, who once told me, when I asked her what was wrong: "Well, if you have to ask, there is no point of me telling you." What bothered me most about that, was that I actually had really no idea how I had offended her, which made me feel like an utter narcissist. I guess we were not on the same level of compassion. But since then, this same fear keeps popping up inside me whenever I'm not able to follow someone's emotions. So this particular sci-fi scenario feels especially horrifying to me.

Ahh! But see if you are super compassionate you would not be thinking on those lines but more on helping those less fortunate. Unfortunately technology and AI can not touch those areas of compassion and true joy and that is up to the individual to develop.

Sounded like kind of a communication thing with you and that old girlfriend. Sometimes it's hard to communicate when someone is in a very emotional state.
Funny but since I had listen to Gabor Mate speaking about how trauma (even traumas as a child that we are not really aware of) effect your behavior and even changing your brain chemistry and it has me watching to see where I am coming from , if it is from the spot of the wounded child or a triggered response or can I really be present and respond well instead of reacting. Gabor Mate is a very interesting fellow - check him out on Youtube.

Hmmm... How could you use your compassion to help someone who's incapable of compassion? Let alone if they are in the great majority. I think running away sounds most sensible here.

Yes, it was a communication as well as a cultural issue, since she was very Japanese.

I'm familiar with Máté Gábor. Hungarians tend to be very proud of him even if they have no clue who he is. But I read some of his books as my mom was very much into his stuff for a while. It makes sense what he says about childhood experiences shaping our reality in adulthood. But we must be constantly aware of the responsibility to shape each of our present days ourselves, to be able to handle it. The advice is good, but taking it is long, hard work.

Glad you are familiar with Máté Gábor! He made so much sense and has helped me find clarity in some issues. yes that healing or recovery aspect is a work in progress!

Totally agreed with you here my friend.
It seems that the "new" people with their inventions are trying their utmost to beat wisdom with worldly knowledge.
Soon a person will be able to buy an emotional correction chip!
A certain dumbing down of mankind, which makes them more controllable.
Blessings!

I totally agree with you! ...except for not having at least an old-timey flip-phone, in case my car breaks-down in the middle of nowhere! 😬 But yeah, otherwise, I agree that being super-human could become super-tedious, and detach us from reality. What an interesting question and a great answer you gave! 🙌
