Using your Own Standards of Judgement - A Responce to Ecotrain QOTW

in #ecotrain5 years ago

The @ecotrain Question for this week is -

Why do you think most people judge each other. Is there value in it, does it help?

before judging others look at yourself and way of being.jpg

Looking at the "why" it does seem to be a part of human nature.
It could be for the betterment - having good judgement (defined as good sense) or
for the detriment - being judgemental (defined as condemning, critical especially in moral matters.)

The words judge and criticize seem to have some correlation to me. When looking up the definitions -

Judge

form an opinion about, estimate, appearance.

Criticism

find fault with; censure

I have been on the receiving end of criticism and noticed in myself when it happened quite often I would start to develop a fear of being judged and would not feel free to be myself.

Thus, I would put out a word of caution that it is better if you can get to know someone before you start to criticize or judge them.

When you judge people on a superficial level, judging them by how they dress, where you find them, you may miss out on a great connection.
Take for instance someone who looks a little ragged and you label them as a bum, when the truth is they may be a highly developed person who could have departed some wisdom to you.

I want to take this deeper with some thoughts that came about after having read Jordon Peterson's book "12 Rules for Life. An Antidote for Chaos"

His Rule #6

Set Your House in Perfect Order Before You Criticize the World"

This is a pretty bold statement but stands in good steed when you begin to judge other.

Look at yourself first, what type of person are you? What is your character? Do you admire it?

If you are criticizing others is that because a part of you wants to be elevated. Do you do it just to boost your own ego?
Perhaps it has gotten so bad that you start to criticize reality itself as not sufficient enough or worse yet you start criticizing Being itself.

Or can you see clearly and take responsibility?

If you have taken full responsibility for yourself, can you let go of looking outside yourself, blaming and criticizing others?

Have you cleaned up your life, your character? If not what better time than now to START!
To recognize and stop living out those character flaws.
Start paying attention and if you start seeing corruption arising , arrest it and bring out those better qualities instead.

Never being too harsh on yourself but being accepting and knowing your limitations.

Another quote from Peterson's book -

How can a person who is awake avoid outrage at the world?

Know that you can't change the reality of the world but you can change your own being.

Another quote:

Every person is to complex to know themselves completely and we all contain wisdom that we cannot comprehend.

Have you ever had that feeling when your entire being is trying to tell you something?
Pay attention to that and have good judgement and build good character.
Something you can speak of with honor.

Use your own standard of judgement on yourself first.
You may find this will bring about better relationships.
You'll find you will become a better judge of character.
Use that to decide who to associate with, who is deserving of respect and who to get more involved with.

Keep checking in on your ways of being and see what changes you can make. Your judgement will improve, your life may become simpler and it can give you more confidence for moving forwards.

Who knows, perhaps you may even become a powerful force for peace and along the way make some wonderful connections.

Hey! What if more people did this - can you see the possibility for a more peaceful and loving world? I can.

That is so priceless!!!!!!! oh and If you are criticizing others is that because a part of you wants to be elevated.

I'd like to know how many of us truly get out house in order? Everytime I think I have something slips me up or tests me....meaning more work to be done. This means I probably have no right to critize the world at all according to Jordan. For me critizing the world and judging a single person are slightly different things. But I still get it but more like this: why waste ur energy on thinking (judging/critizing) when you got alot of your own shit to deal with.

How true! There are all those layers too and it's how willing you are to dig deeper. I definitely don't have time to be judging or criticizing other with all the work I have to do on myself.

Truly wonderful advice to live by - thank you I appreciated reading this.

I can also imagine a world to be more peacful and enjoyable if more people thought this way.

I really like your example:

someone who looks a little ragged and you label them as a bum, when the truth is they may be a highly developed person who could have departed some wisdom to you.

Thanks for the post and introducing that book too

Yes, we often miss out on some wonderful connections because we judge them and never take the time to really get to know folks. Jordon Peterson had some excellent interviews and such he has been doing - Just do a search on Youtube for Jordon B. Peterson he has a channel and there is always new videos coming up.

Thanks for that name, I'll look him up. So true about the missed connections! It's too bad we're like that.
