Some thoughts on buying Land for Homesteading use, so you get the perfect land for your homestead!

in #ecotrain5 years ago

How much land do you need to have a safe haven if the SHTF, and the World pauses, and stumbles? There are many school of thought on this, and all have some merit. One says the land must be well hidden. Another says it must be a significant acreage , while still another says it can be a single acre. Some think that quality is more important than quantity. Some insist that a local neighborhood in the deep country is the only solution.

The real truth is that they are all right, and wrong. Each homestead will have different land requirements. Because each homesteader is different! These differences, require a corresponding difference in the homestead plan. Our differences are the source of these variations, and bring the heat to these discussions. There is, fortunately no wrong answer; but each homestead plan needs to be well thought out, to enhance the individual homesteader!

We need to approach this realistically, or our homestead will look like this:

Here is a good distillation of the possibilities:

I can only tell you MY choices, and the reasoning behind them, in the hopes that it may help you find the right land for your homestead!

First, MY personal restrictions were that I had to pay cash for any land I bought. This is right FOR ME, because I have decided to be debt free.
Second, I want a small enough piece of property to be able to take care of it myself.
Third, The property for me needs to be in driving range of Tulsa, where I consult with businesses.
Fourth, There MUST be water from several sources close.
Fifth, I want about half the land well shaded by large trees.
Sixth, I want some neighbors, for greater strength if the SHTF.
Seventh, I must be able to grow a surplus of food.
Eighth, I want a zero net energy house.
Ninth, I need room for a shop for my business.
Tenth, and most important item for me is a good place for growing my herbal garden for medicine!

It took me several years of looking, and dumping money in the bank, but when I found the right land, I had enough to buy it.

The most important thing is that the homesteaders sit down and make there list! That list will guide them to a piece of homestead Heaven! So next time you hear a heated argument over the perfect plot of land, just smile and understand that they are both right, and wrong! We homesteaders should be supporting each other, and celebrating our differences; understanding that therein is our strength!

Be blessed, and happy homesteading!

sir smithlabs! Hey what's wrong with that example house you showed? I like that place. Except the pink, that's hard to take. The only problem with your plan is neighbors. You'd scare anyone away so I don't think part of your plan is going to work. One of my requirements is that there is a McDonalds close by. If there is then survival will be easy.

I PLAN on Scaring everyone away,ROFLOL!

Your plan would be good if McDonalds actually sold Food, I think they are in the industrial waste disposal

:)>

oh man sir smithlabs, now you're gonna ruin my plan! I like that stuff. I haven't eaten any for two or three years but I like it! lol. How did it go today at the Denver House?

Today we fed 50 people at the Denver House! They ate Very well. (No food from McDonalds, LOL)

I went to a wonderful concert done in Acapella and done with great talent! The Man that sang drums, had a much longer beard than mine, ROFLOL!

:)>

hey smithlabs, where was the concert at, are you saying the Denver House people put it on?

It was at church. We had about 300 there. The music was enthralling, I enjoyed it a lot! The Group is called The Vocal Union, and they can really sing!

:)>

sir smithlabs! Are you talking about your home church? Are you trying to talk in riddles? Can you make this any more cryptic?
What is the name of your church, do you think you could answer that one simple question and keep it simple? Don't make me come up there.

I told you where I go to church:

Oldtimers memory problems; LOL?

Located at:

NOW IS that direct and clear enough?

If you don't forget it again....

Interesting. I’ve always thought the bug-out vs bug-in question was difficult to answer because it would depend on what the SHTF situation was. As its is I have both - my Israeli apartment has an earthquake and nuke proof armoured safe room with full NBC air filtration (all new Israeli apartments have this).
I also have a bug out option in remote Australia which satisfies most of your criteria above.

A kindred spirit, welcome here! I am moving to the country as a Bug In setup, in a bug out location. I will be building a 'storm shelter' with full air filtration and Earth shielding.

That is a SMART thing to have; there and here! Your bug out is a ways away, you have plans toget there, obviously. My Wife is in a wheelchair, so I need the bug in / bug out pair. That influences my list heavily. But once we get out there, we should be safe to bug in.

But prepping for disaster is hard to do here, because lots of people think that preppers are nuts. But I admit to being a little crazy, LOL!
