There are several help strategies that serve to carry out a better management of the limits, above all respectful and positive. That is, the limits are not based on shouting, on prohibitions, but on something more respectful when it comes to involving the child and more simply because the idea is not to pay attention and be respectful out of fear, but to respect oneself and even to others, since respect covers everything if you know the limits.

It is ideal to set limits so that children understand and learn that they really must carry out the appropriate behavior that corresponds to their age, with what they are asked, with the duty itself, that they have a conscious person.


Is it appropriate to involve children in the rules that are established?

It is always important to give children the opportunity to decide, and that they are part of their own rules. What we want to achieve is that children from an early age are responsible for the decisions made.

There is no age to start with the limits, and what should be done is the following:

  • The importance of being constant and consistent.
  • Study the way in which it responds to the suggested demands.
As children grow, they want to take initiatives, and it is an important role where they want to feel important and that should not be eliminated, but the limits should be set as follows:
  • In accordance with the expected behaviors. It is necessary to sit down with the child to explain the agreements to which they must arrive with discipline, respect and always focused on the limits that exist between a child and an adult.
You should always consider having a space to talk about the rules and limits, so that you always have the correct orientation and do not lose your way.

How to establish respectful limits?


The rules should be established more clearly, letting them know that they are not in discussion, not following them. It is something established and for this we can use some example of help that is visual, such as:

  • A blackboard or a board with the rules, limits, among others.
It is like putting into practice a visual calendar to maintain the agreed rules. With this, we have an anticipation of what can and can not be done, and it is very important that children understand the logical consequences that therefore correspond to the behavior.

Logical and natural consequences when establishing limits


The limits can be established so that without addressing the children in a harassing way they understand it as a learning, that is, teaching them to have alternate behaviors.

For example:

  • When a child paints on the wall, instead of scolding him abruptly, he is told that he can draw, but in the sketchbook, he must take into account and exercise alternative behaviors.
  • Also, make it clear that the acts have consequences and, therefore, you should clean up what you draw by mistake on the wall, because you can not leave it dirty and in this way you are learning the good and the bad.
Then, the child understands that he can draw, only that he has to do it in a place allowed for it.
